I have shot enough big bull elk to know they can take a beating and keep on ticking from time to time..

At those extended ranges I would want the biggest fastest bullet I could find...

The 338/378 sounds like a winner to me...

I'd rather do my hunting before I shoot, so I like to get close and use a .338 Win with a 300 gr. Woodleigh.

WOW, a 2 year old thread is still living Eeker... Simply stated, for long ranges like that, it's hard to beat a 338-378.. That's my choice here in Arizona when shots can be as little as 50 yds and certainly out past 500... My personal comfort zone only goes to about 300, maybe 350... For those who shy away from the Weatherby cartridges you certainly can go with a 338 RUM or 338 Lapua thumb...

my ultra-long range rig is a 338 lapua mag in Sako TRGS. It shoots 0.5 MOA @ 600 yds after rebedding and trigger adjustment when I am having a good day. If recoil tolerance is not a problem, this is the way to go. I have also tried a Rem 700 300 Wby, a Sako 30-378, and a REM 7mm ultra, but the lapua is tops at my 600 yd range. Bucks wind the best, great brass (lapua) and great bullets (GSC HV from custom brass and bullets)
And best of all, the I bought the TRGS's for about 600 bucks! These have to be the most accurate production rifles ever. The 30-378 is a MOA shooter, and a friends 30-378 regularly gives one hole groups at 100 yds.
