They aren't quite a matched pair, but I went .30-06 and .338-06. Both are Stainless steel M70 rifles and both are being dropped into Hunters Edge stocks. The 06 is just a Classic FWT and the .338 is another Classic getting a Pac-Nor #3 super match 3 groove barrel installed by Kevin Weaver. The only difference is in the stocks as the 06 is an ADL style and the other uses the floor plate, but when you buy what's available what do you expect.

How about this classic “European” combo 9.3x62 and 7x64 ! A lot of class and history and still very effective for everything from Bears to gophers coffee

Well, the thread is "American", so Boomstick's choices get priority, despite their insignificant 0.007" smaller diameters. Both sets are ballistically and huntingly equivalent, excellent choices for standard 0.473" caseheads.

So many good calibres to choose from. I might change my 270 Win and 338 WinMag to
270 Win and 375 Ruger if the rifles were both better than MOA accurate. The 375s are slowly getting enough premium, light bullets to make the 375 an all-around calibre the likes of the 338 WinMag. Neverthelss, in Africa I would probably go with 338 WinMag and 416 Ruger, available in Ruger rifles, but not matching sets, since the 416 is only available in the Alaskan for the moment. For matching African rifles, I would choose the 375 Ruger and 338 WinMag in a woodstocked Ruger Hawkeye. On second thought, it would be more practical to make both a 375 Ruger. Then one only needs one set of ammo.

If matching rifles were stipulated for North America, I might stay with a Model 70 Winchester, control-feed, in 270 Win and 338 WinMag. Both could handle pronghorn and elk and black bear, none of which I have ever hunted. The 338 WinMag would meet minimum expectations in Alaska.

Being that both the 270 and 35 Whelen are still on the market close to 100 years a piece after inception I would say that is pretty classic. Heck I would even have a long neck version I came up with a few years back by necking up the 270 to give a .490" neck length and 2.54" case length just because I'm crazy that way. Big Grin

Ingvar,

my actual choice is 270 win and 9,3x62 the best of both world all in LH Zastava.

7x64 is another good choice but the 270 win is really an efficient too ...

Well, Pop's 264WM and 338WM are back to NorthAmerican cartridges. Pretty much the same ballistically as the classic 270Win and 338WM.

And you gotta love Hawaian and Cobra's 7-08 and 416 Ruger, sort of bracketing the classic combo with a little less and then some more power on both ends.

Actually, I have two three gun "sets" which fit your specifications. One set uses 1937 Oberndorf Mauser actions made for the Portuguese military, and are in caliber 6.5X.308 (now .260 Remington), .308 and .358.

The other set consists of rifles built on double heat treated 1903 Springfield actions in calibers 7mm Remington Magnum, .375/.338 (.375 Taylor), and .458 Winchester Magnum. They all have identical stocks, identical sighting equipment, identical barrel length and handle just the same.

How about a "matched pair" of Ruger Hawkeye African rifles, one in .375 Ruger for big game anywhere and one in .223 Remington for small game? Both with the iron sights as well as scopes with quick release mounts. Now that would be a sweet set up!
And pretty, too.

My ammunition failed to arrive from an African trip. Taking that prospect into consideration I would have to choose the 30/06 and .375 H&H. Ammo for these is available anywhere big game is hunted and they both do a very good job.

Classic almost requires a 30-06 and my personal Favorite is a 280 Remington, though both are similar in capabilities, so I guess and I'd add a 22-250, both Ackley Improved for the final American touch.

I have a pair in the works -> originally ordered a .270 Win and .300 Win for a matched pair.....which I still think is perfect as they are balistic twins with 130/180gr @ 3000 fps.

But I've since changed the second rifle to 340 Wby with a second synthetic stock for bear.

Nice call on the Weatherby upgrade. A powder capacity around 95-100 grains is ideal for .338" and gets you a significant bullet increase over the .277 and .308" weights and diameters.

With a 210 TTSX you will have a ballistic twin with the 270Win at 3100fps. Now it will be 130 grain and 210 grain. If you want something heavier, then you can do 140 and 225 at about 2950 fps.

I'm doing a three gun battery in American calibers using an American action.
All are based on the Winchester 1895 action, 30-06, 375 Whelen and 405 Winchester.
These should handle most everything.

At one time I was going to build up a line of '06 class customs built on 1909 Argentine Mauser actions. I'd lean towards the Argy's for the pair. The problem here is that it would be difficult to pick just two since there are lots of interesting siblings in this line up. If I was to go for a matched pair, I suppose that for North American big game I'd pick either a 6.5-'06 or a .270 for most game and then either a .338-'06 or a 35 Whelen loaded hot with heavy 'partitions' for big-bodied game. Final choice.......6.5-'06 and .338-'06.

Yeah. I'm warming up to wildcats. None yet in the safe. I went for the cool factor and kept them in the same '06 based cartridge class. Might also consider the 7X57 class. I guess I've grown into more of a rifleman than a hunter.

I guess I see this like Alberta. I'd probably be just as happy with a couple of '06s but, as it happens, we have matching 700s in .300 WBY. Kid's has a 2.5-8X Leup. Mine wears a 2 MOA T1 Micro.

We have bolts in Swift, .243, 270, '06, .308, .338, and .300 Win. But we're less interested in trying new stuff vs using what we know works.

So many good choices:

270 and 338
7x57 and 300 H&H
250 Savage and 375..

But if push come to shove, I guess I'd pick two 30-06s..

My selections would be a 358 Win and 300 Win Mag. These two would cover you for large game at short to longer distances. The 358 Win is a great woods rifle and the 300 Win Mag works great for the BIG stuff.
