Is anyone making one of these?

i built one in .308 and love it. i started with a savage #10 "sierra", used a 2.5 leupold scout scope, and a rifle basics trigger. it shoots great out to 200yds. if i do my part. i see no reason that a '06 would not perform as well.

cheersA 30-06 would make a good scout rifle. The small power scopes and the usually shorter barrels somewhat restrict it's normal max. effective range (mainly the ability to place a shot at longer ranges) to the point that the .308 will serve you just as well. And that from one who thinks a .308 is a poor design. stirroger

I had one for a while, but it was a custom. I've posted about it here many times; do a search and you'll find plenty of posts.

If I had a typically short Scout barrel, I'd go 308 unless I had a ton of 30-06 ammo on hand.

I have one on a 03 action with a 18 inch barrel.

I find the increase in muzzle blast and the decrease in Vel not all that nice.

Carrys nice ( not that much nicer) I have shot a few things with it.

I wouldn't do it again.

Give my a standard rifle with proper scope set up over a scout rifle.

I have a Ruger M77 MkII in 3006 with an 18 inch barrel. The muzzle blast has never bothered me and the velocity loss is inconsequential, everything I have shot with it has been within 200 yards. This includes Kudu, Wildebeest, Impala, etc. The advantage of the 30 06 over the .308 is the ability to use the 200 and 220 gr. bullets. With the great bullets available today the heavier bullets are not the advantage they once were.

I would opt for the .308 if Ruger offered their Frontier rifle with a left-handed action.

My uncle used an '03 pseudo-scout on our trip to South Africa in June. Worked well. See the pic of his warthog in the following thread.

If I were going to make a scout rifle Id simply find which one of a dozen 8X57 bbls Ive got shoots the best and put it on a M-48 action. What could possibly be better for a scout rifle than a stripper clip loadable Mauser with an abundance of cheap millsurp ammo available. mgun
