Rank your deer/elk cartridges in your battery
the deer/elk class cart thread is a good one but how about you RANK them in order of of most likely to kill with it of the guns you used to take game with??? In other words your hunting buddy shows up and says come on...here is a tag, lets go! of the battery what CART would you chose not GUN...some have unliked carts but in great guns but if all the guns were identical...

Seems Bartsche would go for a 8x57 wave

so of those in the gun safe/rack/behind the door that you have used...

how would you rank them in order of i'd rather hunt with this cart over this one ect.

Thanks for playing thumb

Deer only - 7x57 hands down.
Chance of deer/elk/moose:
7x57 or 30/06 if heavy cover, close in.
375 H&H if open country with long ranging shots. My old Sako is a very, very accurate piece with good glass.

If I were to rank mine my list gets much shorter.

1-.270 Win I have killed the most deer and elk with it.
2-.50 Cal BP has killed the more deer than my .270 Win.
3-.30-06 Killed my first elk with this cartridge with a borrowed rifle, then bought my .270.
4-.338-06 I haven't killed anything with it yet but I'll keep trying.

I tend to choose based on which area I'm headed to. On the flatlands chances are good I'll have a 30-06, but I've been known to use the 7m/m Rem too. In the hills it's a toss up. When deer hunting only I'll probably have my trusty -06 or 257, but when elk are in the equation I will definitely take my 338 for a ride(altho the 348 has gone with a few times too.)
Here's the fun part. When filling doe tags my buddies and I use our vintage military rifles. Nothing like baggin' Bambie's mom with an 03A3 or 6.5X55 or 7X57 or 8X57 -well you get the picture.

Well ranking is one way of looking at it . It depends on Where I'm off to Hunt .

For me going on a Hunt without one of my 7 MM's is well kind of like leaving something behind like a foot or arm !. My Mauser 3000 L has been with me since 1963 !.

7 MM RM or 6.5 X 55
30/06 or .308
.338 30/378

But the last elk I shot met his demise from a .50 muzzleloader.....

coffeeWhen I was young, dumb, happy ( also broke) living in Grand Junction, the choices would have been easy: a 30-06 or a 30-06. Everything else I had ( which wasn't much) was probably a little too puny.

If it were a short notice and around a two day EZ hunt I,d probably carry the .358 X .404 IMP with 250 gr. psp cup & core bullets at over 3100 fps. shocker.

If it were like in days of old ,longer duration , on horse, some open country and an abundance of timber I,d most lickly op for one of the 8mm X 57s in a scout configuration for fast handling.

Unhappily I probably will never have to make that choice again. I shoot 10 times more now but nothing ever bleeds. fishingexcept a 125 pound halibut a 8mm-06 of mine dispatched prior to bringing him or her into the boat.
But than having a lot of choices and being a little fickle at times---well I really can't say.

My last choice would be the .308, second last 6.5 X 55 and 3rd last ( maybe) one of the 7 X 57 scouts.BOOMroger

Elk

300 win mag - A caliber that has always lived up to and exceeded in most cases the velocities and ballistics I expect of it. 200 gr Accubond at 2950 fps
338 win mag - A hard hitter but I have had a hard time getting the velocity expected. 210 gr TSX at 2925 fps or 225 gr Accubond at 2800 fps
280AI - Very accurate and will shoot with the 7 mag with less powder and recoil. 160 gr Accubond at 3025 fps
30-06 - Very accurate and I love what the 200 gr Accubond at 2700 fps does. Just aim higher or get a reticle to match.

Deer
280AI - Flat shooter and just right with the 160 Accubond
30-06 - 200 gr Accubond and eat right up to the hole
300 win mag - Can't kill 'em too dead.

500, 470, 458, 416 AR .. which ever i happen to have loaded ammo for, that's not in load dev mode

then 376 steyr (haven't gotten around to building a ruger yet)
then one of my 358 winchesters

then
300 win

then back to 416 AR, with light bullets loaded fast....

and if it's just shooting goats, my wife's 708

and if mostly kicking, close range... a handirifle in 45/70!
