OK. dpcd mentioned on another thread, that Ruger will make any rifle you want, if you will order 100 rifles.

Assuming a Ruger African model, like the Lipsey's recent releases, what caliber would you choose?

They have currently made three: 275 Rigby, 6.5x55, and 9.3x62.

They will announce their 2020 caliber soon. What would be your wish?

Mine? 35 Whelen, 338-06, 358 Norma Mag., 318 WR...

Tell us your huckleberry!

I'm glad to see all this renewed interest in the 35 Whelen. It was a bit of a sleeper there for a while.

I like Palladin8's choices except I would replace the Whelen with my old favorite .318 express. I would also buy the African in the classic .303 in a heartbeat!

A 405 & 303? Rimmed rounds in a bolt action?

I know it can be done (LeeEnfield), but should it be done? Again?

Interesting choices...

I have a 405 Win on a 03 action that works quite well. Mauser made slant magazine 98's for the 303 and the Siamese Mauser. Lets not forget the P-14 Enfield action in 303. Even Winchester made Model 54's in 30/30. Rimmed cartridges are not that big an issue in a bolt gun, but they have little attraction for the masses, being for the most part, lower pressure, less "powerful" non-magnum rounds.
I cannot think of anything more "African" than the old 303 British and as said, would buy the Ruger so chambered, in a minute!

I would have adds the 350 Rigby instead of the 9.3x66 Sako, but Ruger would never hog the action out of the Model 77 Hawkeye (30/06 length and bolt diameter 573) to fit a 350 Rigby.

The Ruger Safari Magnum Action is never coming back.

A few of you have mentioned the 35 Whelen in 1:12 twist. Now that Ruger has recently made both their single shot No. 1 and their Hawkeye bolts with 1:12 Whelens, it would be no problem for them to make an African with that twist.

Hey Lipsey's.....!!!

I have many Whelens, but only (1) 338-06.

A Ruger African Lipsey's special in 338-06 would be, well, special!

Nosler makes (6) different loads for this round: 180, 200, 225, & 250 grs.

The 2020 Lipsey’s exclusive model will most likely be 35 Whelen.

I would like a 9lb, 24” barreled, no break, fixed “V” rear sight 416 Ruger.

Seems to me that a Ruger “African Model” needs to be done in a typical African medium game calibre? No?

So...... .318 WR would be a Hail Mary play, but so classic.

If they do the 35 Whelen on the African without the brake, please, I suggest a heavier barrel contour like on the first generation African 9.3x62 instead of the lighter profile used on the most recent 9.3x62.

Same for the impossibly long shot 9.3x66.

I have not held either model but would prefer light and lithe I think. Especially Chasing down a herd of buffalo as it were. I have never done that but have ran up into an elk herd to create confusion. It worked.

I would buy one in 318WR too!
Of course, 24" barrel, express sights, no brake, proper twist and the assurance that Hornady was supporting with brass and bullets.

With an MSRP of $1279 for standard Rugers and Lipsey's specials (they have 9.3x62 on their site now), what do you think the order price would be?
Maybe $850-$1K?

Speaking only for myself, that is 3/4 lb. that I would not like/want on a 35 Whelen or 9.3x62.

And again, we are all individuals, so what one person would hope for, another may not appreciate.

However, some bigger calibers have been mentioned on this thread like 358 Norma Mag. & 404 Jeffery, and I would agree for those rounds, I would appreciate a heavier rifle. beer

Huv; yes the quantity price is in that range, but since we have no two requests alike, let alone the numbers we need for an order, the whole thing is moot.
Maybe some don't want a Ruger product but I, and many others, find them quite good at what they do. I am still shooting tang safety ones.....now antiques.
I personally would get them in 10.75x68 and then I will make reloading die sets so everyone will have them. With that much demand, we can get Starline to make brass for us.
(A .404 is out; that would require their magnum action; whole nother ball game.)

DPCD

I take the thread as not actually soliciting a group buy, but what we would like to see from the Ruger/Lipsey exclusive partnership. That maybe my faulting comprehension skills.

That said an African without a muzzle brake in 35 Whelen 1 and 12 twist with 24 inch barrels seems to be the consensus of the group. Maybe Hornady could do a joint thing and being out a 275 grain load. They use to make a 275 grain bullet.

The secondary choice seems to be the 318 WR.

A better question maybe let’s assume one hundred members would send a check for a 35 Whelen African without the brake and 1:12 inch twist, how do we go about setting up the logistics of such buy.

SureFire: We cannot agree about everything. I like a little heavier contour, but that is just taste. Neither is wrong,

I did not think about the 10.75x68. That is a great idea.
