I have some unknown aversion and dislike for some really good calibers. I don't know why, but I do. Not a bit of logic in it.

I can't stand the .270. I will never buy one. Give me a .280 any day.

I don't care for the .338 either. Either my .35 Whelen or my .375. Don't need or want a .338.

If I want to throw a .308 fast I'll use a .300RUM; if I want to throw 'em slow I'll use an '06 Ackley.

Can't stand the .243 either. Its too big to be the ideal varmint rifle and too small for much else......

Yeah, I'm a .270 hater, but I love my .280. I'm really not a fan of a .30caliber anything. They are ok in my Garands or an M1A1 but I prefer the 7mm or the .338 bore, any of them, in a bolt rifle. The .243 doesn't tickle my funny bone either.

Never have liked any of the Belted Mags.

Just a minute while I get my Nomex undies and Louisville Slugger troll repellant.

I don't care for big overbore magnumbs or any of the alphabet soup magnums.

I don't care for the 243, or 270 either, and much prefer the Remington numbers in 6m/m and 280. Didn't like 264 either ...until I got a Swede.

Just about all the .264 and non-magnum 7mm cartridges are ho-hum... throw the .308 in as well. Then there are the WSSMs...

Further the RUMs and SAUMs and WSMs and WSSMs can be hauled away and I won't shed a tear.

I have a prejudice against the 270's, all of them and don't really know why. I love the 30/06 and 243 because I have shot them. I also have a fantasy love affair with a 6.5mm although I have never even shot one. Is this insane or what?

I don't like any of the poorly designed short neck cartridges.That includes all of the .308 family, .300 Winchester and all of the short fats. Throw in the .223. roger

I don't like the 243 and 338 Win Mag. I've owned a couple of each and could never find what they were the best choice for. They alwasy seemed to be too big or too small.

Every notice how people tend to be loyal to the calibers and rifles they were foolish enough to buy once? I have a friend that still tries to defend the 8mm Lebel that he once bought.

I love them all but I've never really found a nich for the 270 or the 7mm-08. That said I own and shoot both so I guess I'm not too serious in my dislike. I still have yet to take the 270 hunting and that is something I usually do soon after I get a new gun. really don't know why.

The reason I am not a .270 guy may be sim. to the rest of yours. When I was growing up all, each & everyone of my uncles & cousins had a .270. Almost every hunting story told or printed included the .270 or 06. That was enough for me to seek my own identity when looking for a hunting cartridge. Safari_hunter was right, if they came out w/ a .280 in the M70, the .270 would have been a poor stepchild.

The dominant "big game" cartridge in New England is still the 30-06. This one overlaps others and does it all and it will do it for Western hunting as well. Thus if the cartridge is similar to the 30-06 it will do about the same thing. This makes sense.

My feelings as to what I do and don't like have changed. For instance I objected to the 308 as it displaced by favorite but I got over that. We never bothered with 270's as the 30-06 was far more practical being the nations military round as well with all that free CMP ammo.

Today I have some 270's as I came across some nice rifles which count more than the cartridge. The 270's good/ok. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing that the 06 can't overlap.

Any metric cartridge , especialy 7x57 and 9.3x62 !

I have no use for any 270 as they are larger than necessary for deer and on the small side for elk or moose.

I have no objective reason for disliking the following cartridges, but they just don't float my boat:

All the new Ultra mags and Short Action rounds;
Pretty much anything 30 caliber;
220 Swift;
All Weatherby rounds except the 375;
and the 270 Win.

I have never been crazy about the 30-06. I started with a 30-30 when that is all I could afford. Next I went to a .308, then went on to the .300 Winny when I cast my eyes on the bigger game than Deer. I was also never crazy about the .270 and would have probably gotten a .280 if I went that route. After the .270 WSM came out I got one and now am absolutely crazy about it, as it outdoes both the .270 and 280 considerably with my rifle and reloading. I also was not crazy about the .375 H&H, and consider it neither fish or fowl for the dangerous game with big lead absorbing bodies. When I wanted a dangerous game rifle I went with the .416 Rem and Rigby and love both.----- Now, I ask you, did I pick the ICONS of rifle chamberings to not be crazy about, or not. Well so be it, I am happy as a lark shooting everyting but those three and will continue find my battery of rifles more than adequate the world over. Good shooting.

Any cartridge developed after 1963. LOVE those developed before 1915.

Get used to it. They both still work and there's a zillion of them out there.

I know I was just gettin a little loud. Sometimes it is just fun to spout off at the mouth.

I guess I will head down a different path here, while I am not a fan of either the 270 or the 243, I am neutral on both.

I don't like:

30-30
While I had a Marlin in the past, and it was a fun gun, the round stinks. Its a black powder holdover from the neolithic age. If I want a lever gun, and all the associated restrictions give me a 38-55.

45-70
Ditto its a dinosuar, it died a graceful death in the 1930's, its just the cowboy shooting crowd that dug up the corpse and started parading it around. The US Army dumped it in the 1890's for a reason, and it hasn't got any better with age.

I can't believe all the 270 haters out there. Wonderful shooter. And how anyone could hate the 300 win mag, get a life.

Me, I don't like the 308, don't know why. Maybe it's because most of the benchrest paper punchers and semi-auto-shortbarrel-military style wannabe come to the range and pelt me with their 308 military surplus cases all the time (what's that gun good for?)

Hates to strong a word, but I don't like 300 Win Mags either. Winchester should have introduced the 30-338, they didn't, and the rest is history. The shooting worlds lose in my opinion.

I love the .270, .338WM, and .375 H&H, but it does not mean that I hate the others.

It's the 30-06 for me, I hate for someone to call its name. It seems around here everyone thinks its a cannon or something. You can talk about hunting brown bear or cape buffalo and someone will say they have a 30-06 and that will get it done. About all they have shot is a sickly doe deer or feral hog. It may very well be the most versatile thing going but call it the 30 Government or something other than 30 ought 6. I am sure some of the folks who shoot it don't even know what the 06 is. I guess I have always wanted something else because it seemed everyone had one. My 0.02 only

I share your distaste for the .270, probably because O’Connor was paid by Winchester to harp on it shamelessly and relentlessly for so many years. For a similar reason, I can’t stand the mention of the “good ol’ 30-06,†a mediocre military round that’s responsible for wounding more animals than any other in history. The 7mm mag is another sloppy killer, as are all the hyperventilating Weatherbys.

Americans seem to have a real hang-up with and neurotic fear of anything over 30-caliber (unless it’s a 45-70), forcing themselves to creep up to the superfluous .338 when the superior .375 H&H was right there. Am also annoyed by all the new redundant cartridges invented by jack-offs in Remington and Winchester marketing departments for the sole purpose of selling more of their POS rifles to gullible Wal-Mart shoppers.

I can’t think of any possible shooting need that’s not perfectly covered by a classic and thoroughly proven German or English cartridge. For no reason known to man the only American cartridges I have any kind of emotional attachment to are the .280, .35 Whelen and .22 Hornet.

This is a fun thread! Certainly better than the monthly (boring) "what's your favortie caliber" type.

The gun companies have to bring out "new" calibers to sell rifles in order to pay the bills. There really hasn't been anything much "new" for 50 years other than CNC manufacturing. Look at the various "new" calibers that launch a X weight bullet at the same speed that Y cartridge has done for a long time. But the "new" cartridge does it with a shorter and fatter case or without a belt.

To me, that's like claiming that slicing a bolagna sandwich diagonally is superior to slicing it horizontally.

But, if you buy a (new latest-greatest cartridge) and it warms your heart, then I'm not going to fault you. Shoot it well, go hunting with it, and cleanly slay critters with it.

P.S. And please show me the same latitude with my cartridge selection, even if it's a 75 year old version of the same thing.
