Hello all my guncrank friends...

Can the BFR take a shortened 460 WBY based cart?

Since the cylinder is 3" long I was thinking what if the cylinder that could take a 2.5" 32 gauge shell maybe with the rims turned down a tad and add a step for the belt of the WBY case to fire both a shotgun shell and a 550 bullet at the end of a wby case or necked to 500 kinda like a short 500 A2.

Even if the WBY case could not be used a 5 shot 32 gauge is a neet idea. Think of the Taurus "Judge" but more like the "Executioner"

Boomy, I think the real quesion is who would actually be able to shoot it. I have shot and own some big rifles, but these big-bore handguns are harder to shoot in my opinion -- you don't have your whole body absorbing the recoil. While I am sure it is doable, you need to see wat some of these production monsters do on game -- they are lethal!

Yes I know more is not needed but a shotgun shell is easier to shoot than a rifle cart. A 5 shot 32 gauge carbine pistol would be fun to shoot. I was not thinking of a Safarikid Special snub nose but a long barrel version. Maybe a good removable brake to tame it as well. WBY cases are cheap and plentiful. the only advantage is to shoot 500 plus grain bullets or the larger 550 bullet.

5 700 grain pills @ 1300 fps is a fun prospect

Sounds painful to me. The .50 Alaskan will shoot a 525 grain bullet at 1600 fps and 600s over 1400 fps -- the recoil is debilitating and it renders these pistols almost useless. Oddly enough they don't seem to kill any better than the lumbering .500 Linebaugh.

well the shotgun would not need a break but the full house loads would need a break. I wonder how fast 500 grainers could fly out of a 16" barrel.

Rechamber a 500 S&W BFR to a 500 Cyrus with a break.

Boomie, my 50 Alaskan with Buffalo Bore 525 grain flat point hard cast clocks just under 1600 FPS and is abussive in the recoil department and that is with a muzzle break.
Here it is being shot at the Linebaugh Seminar in Jackson, Miss. last year.

With handloads it will exceed 1600 FPS substantialy and will exceed 1400 FPS with 600 grainers. With the exception of the WOW factor it is not worth the effort IMHO.

OK I agree more is not needed... But yaknow...

Like I said the only advantage is shooting the 32 gauge shells, shooting a fatter .550" bullet or shooting the 700 ish grain t-rex bullets.

I think some testing is needed Big Grin

OK SAFARIKID...You got your wish...

Jack said it is doable and he likes the idea.

He said the cylinder would need to be made from "Carpenter 465" a strong stainless.

He likes the versatility of the shotgun shells. The bigger bullet will help with keeping the preasures down.

This would be the absolute biggest you could go on a BFR.

He liked the idea of using the heavy 550 rifle bullets so a case of 2.2" might be a good compromise and seat out lighter bullets if needed. A heavy crimp is gunna be needed for this cart.

It has to leave his company with a 17" barrel to be legal for him to sell but whatever happens after that is not his concern. The longer barrel and slow powder will help with preasures too.

This cart would be able to work in a short action rifle as well.

This gun could get a nice write up I think. SAFARIKID needs a write up in a gun mag too Big Grin

The only thing this needs besides getting made is a name...

Got any Ideas SAFARIKID?

How about 550 SAFARI in your honor?
A Biiiig 5 revolver round Eeker

here is a link to links to sources of 550 bullets

Redhawk, it always looks good on paper to jack velocities up with heavy bullets until someone has to actually touch one off! jumping John Taffin can't shoot the heavy recoilers any more as he has done permanent damage to himself from shooting too many heavily-loaded big caliber handguns in his younger days -- it does take its toll eventually if you do it enough.......

I haven't shot mine since the shoulder surgery, but I will shoot it soon. I had no problem shooting mine before but, a sturdy 2 hand grip is required. The negative about these over size monstrosities is that they do not kill any better than the standard size big bore revolvers, nor do they penetrate any better unless we are talking about Punch bullets.
The neat thing about them is the WOW factor when you pull it out.

This is in a big way making the biggest hole possible like your tag line.

Think of it like going from a 41 mag to a 460 S&W

No expansion necessary so heavy flat nose solids can make a nice hole from snooter to tooter and any bone in between.

Them 800 grain flat nose fmj's would be a doosie Eeker and you have 5 shots Eeker

Marko, Jason test fired Tom's big one. He said the torque was big surprise. If I recall Jack did offer him a full face helmet but he declined. We uasualy let Ed test fire big guns. He's about 5'6" and 290. A fire plug. 500 nitro's move him about as much as a 243 moves me. But since Jason built it he figured he needed to do the deed. It might be a while comming but some more details...

The case can vary in length from 2.15" to 2.5"
we need at least 30 thou to accomodate possible bullet walking so with rifle bullets we are looking at a case length of 2.15" to 2.17" if the crimp to canalure is .8"

A longer case and a shorter bullet can be used to but the "Fun" would be in the heavies.

This requires a good amount of custom work so it would not be cheap but can be done. The cost is increased mostly because of the special cylinder the material needed and Jacks wanting to "Do it right".

Yes sir...

All projects take time and moolah so let's start with the cheap and quick things...

Cart design, reamer print, reamers, dies ECT then the more more substantial things like donor guns and smithing. Remember this can be done on a short action bolt if anyone is inclined.

SAFARIKID... I will keep the fire burning

One of you lunatics better make a short call followed by a letter to the Firearms Technology Branch of the ATF in WV. Tell them what you're doing specifically ask:

I'm making a new cartridge XYZXYZ is it Ok if I put it into a revolver?

A revolver with a short barrel?

Load it with rifle bullets which are monometal?

You may be surprised at the answers.

Also check the CAL DOJ site for specifics which may be prohibited cause it's an over 50 pistol not over 50 rifle.
