This is not a reloading question, but I know someone who reads this will have the answer. How many Ft/Lbs of energy does the Black Hill .357 MAG, 158 Grain CNL (Flat nose) have at 50 yards?

I have checked their web sites and searched over the internet trying to find the answer, but no luck on that particular bullett.

I want to carry my 6" 357 S&W on my up coming elk hunt, but by law, a pistol bullett used for elk hunting, in Colorado, must produce 550 Ft/Lbs of energy at 50 Yards to be legal.

You need 1400fps to have 550 at 50 yds.

Thanks Ranrod, would the fact that the bullett is flat nose instead of hollow point make any difference? Also, would a six inch barrel make any difference?

A flat tip vs hollow point will not have an impact on energy at 50 yds. I have no clue what length barrel they use often a pressure barrel. A 6" revolver with a gap would only lower the velocity.

My opinion you need a 41 at least 44 better yet.

Are you planning to hunt with the pistol, or just use it for a "coup de grace"? If you have a legal rifle with you, would carrying even a .22 pistol have any signifigance, legally?
I know a PH in Africa who uses a .22 pistol for just such needs on elk-sized (kudu, zebra, etc.) game.

Wrong caliber, wrong bullet diameter for elk. Even with the proper bullet, it will be iffy at 25 yd's. If the bullets expand it will have no penetration, if it doesn't, it will make too small of a hole.
Use a minimum of .44.

I planned only to use it as a back up. But from the advise I am getting, it is not good for elk.
