These things could never escape the dogs and coyotes, but BOY! If they could, they'd almost be big game. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." And instead of just fried rabbit, there could be rabbit steaks and rabbit roast & chops. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Success is not the test." Ryan "Those who vote decide nothing. Somebody just came up with the idea to start a breeding program with these rabbits in developing countries, since they like to breed and produce a lot of meat.

One must take into account that they get that big because they eat so much. The breeder's secret isn't just genetics, it's also their diet. Sarge Holland's .375: One Planet, One Rifle . . . for one hundred years!

The first time I saw these at a show, I wanted to buy a pair and release them at the shoot to scare the foxes away!!! They really are that big naturally. Rgds FB

I've seen good sized rabbits at the Fair. I've never seen any that big though.

Lenny, The British Giant rabbit is quite a rareish specific breed. We saw them at the Edenbridge and Oxted show 3-4 years ago and there was only one exhibitor. He wasn;t there the next year, and had only a couple of part grown rabbits he third year. I think the problem with them is they have a lot of novelty value but are much highter maintenance than a regular bunny. I'm going again in 3 weeks or so and I always make sure to go see the Giant rabbits!! I was telling a freind about them after the first time I saw them abnd she thought I was winding her up!! They must get through some seri9ous food though. FB

I would have my doubts about the real commercial value of any giant domesticated animal. There's a expense/return ratio that compares the cost of the food with the return on the meat that defeats the whole idea. For example, though the domestic hog can reach nearly a half ton in live weight, they go to slaughter at around 200 lbs because that's the point where the return on the meat is highest compared to the cost of the feed. Go to a commercial rabbitry and you will find New Zealand Whites, Californias and other medium-sized breeds simply because they're more profitable.
