My taxidermist finished my hyena rug. The bill is $950. Does this price sound a little steep?

I think you can get plugs for less than that.

For that price I would have to think it has the head fully mounted with an open mouth. Even with that, a bit high.
If it is a rug only...... well..... I would say it was steep.

If this is an open mouth/head-mounted rug, with felt backing, it sounds very reasonable to me.

My Hyena Rug was done in Zim for $575 two years ago but don't expect it for that price done in Australia or the US.

Maybe Oz or Donato will come back and post a photo. I haven't seen a hyena rug yet.

Donato - $950 for the rug is not steep at all. Actually a bit under average for the western U.S. assuming that is where it was done. Average out here runs around $900 - $1,250 for a hyena properly rugged. Post a pic, I'm thinking of my next one in a rug. Kind of fixes their backwards built body.

New to the AR board but know a little about rugs. The price is a little high, but the hyena has thin hair and is not easy to work with. Usually, the price is lower but in the this case, due to circumstances is ok.

I did one a few years back for a taxidermist. Looked really good. As,primarily,a wholesale rugmaker for the taxidermy industry nationwide for the past 20 years, I would say that is a very fair price. With rugmaking, even though the head area is less than a shoulder mount you still have a comparible amount of time working on the face and doing the facial finish work, plus the whole hide to work with making the rug. Rugmaking is a very time involved process in increments over a 2-4 day span.

Would be nice to see a picture!

Hey Greg, didn't know you went to Africa?

Kindest regards,
Mary

This rug has a felt border. I personally prefer leather borders on African rugs. I feel leather gives them the classic distinction they deserve.

Nicely done! That's the best one I have seen. I agree that it's only lacking a leather border. It needs some elephant leather for that. thumb
