I don't know about you guys but I was afflicted at an early age with SDD (shootin' deficit disorder). I have come to believe that the affliction is incurable. The only way I can seem to get some relief is to go hunting and kill something (not harvest, but kill). So in order to get some relief I went to my lease in Vanderpool last weekend. Mercifully a small hoglet came out and I was able to nail him with my 35 Whelen. Being as everything is bigger in Texas than anyplace else than Alaska, I estimate that this dude was at least, but not more than 11 months, 2 days, 7 hours and 1 minute old. That means he was old enough to kill. However, some of you free range western hunters may be able to be more specific about the actual aging of a hoglet. I willingly stand to be corrected. I weighed him at 270 lbs.
Anyway he succumbed to lead poisoning and a massive heacache. I asked him if he minded me posting his picture here, he did not object. I took his silence to be an affirmation of my request.
I'm heading back this weekend. I saw his big brother but did not get a chance to introduce him to Mr. Whelen.

Being an European, when seeing the first pic showing a reddish boar, I guessed it was a not more than 7 months old pig.

Geee, the 2nd pic displays the serious size of the critter, and the tremendous cuttlery attests that it's a full grown respectable BOAR. Eeker
Congratulations, that's a solid Boar that few people would ever have a chance to meet, let alone shoot.
You lucky bastard thumb

Good luck hunting! It should be brisk in the mornings, so maybe those big porkers will be on the move.

Hopefully they'll be moving towards your bullets... Big Grin

Don't forget to post pictures when you get back!

Mr. Whelen doth speak with authority! And you do seem to use it very well indeed Wink

Congratulations on your temporary relief from SDD! Won't last long though ... and you'll have to go do it again. Hope your freezer is big enough!

You mean you didn't let that little substandard piglet walk? Shame on you. Big Grin I bet if you would have packed him out three miles on your back you'd get more respect. Wink

Honestly, that's a great hog, and one I'd be proud to remove from the gene pool any day. Good going!

D99,
the rancher calls them hoglets, I was making a feeble attempt at humor.

Bob, that is a fine boar that you had mounted. Hopefully mine will look as good.

Geedubya.....that is one damn fine lookin' hog!! That's something I've still yet to kill.....a boar with really nice teeth. I've shot 2 hogs over 300 lbs. and neither had large tusks (one was a sow, and the other was a boar that broke both of his off).

My guess from the length of the tusks is that hog is 2-3 years old. If it were a yearling, the tusks would only be about an inch showing above the gums, almost pyramid shaped.

I suggest that we ask Kayler Hamann who often posts here. He not only hunts porkers professionally but is also a wildlife biologist.

I was making a feeble attempt at humor with the wording of my post.
A joke is usually not funny if you have to explain it. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, I aged the hog based on the date it was shot, December 2, 2008 at 7:01 am . (Hence 11 months, 2 days 7 hours and 1 minute). He probably is a least two or three years old if not more.

I usually shoot lots of hogs each year, and that was a pretty good one. I have also killed bigger but only one other with comparable cutters.

GWB,
Sorry, that one went completely over my head. Nice hog, I must concede that everything does grow bigger in Texas. Our porkers are semi-"pygmies" at best, and are often "hairless" without the bikinis.

Best Wishes for the Holidays,

If you've got the lower jaw, here is a site that will help you age the hog, similar to aging a white-tailed deer by tooth wear.

CC,
The rifle in the picture is an old mauser 98 that was built in the late 70's or early 80's, by a local smith of some renown by the name of Wayne Barnett. Luckily I was able to liberate it from its previous owner. It now receives the attention, adulation and fondling it deserves. It has an exquisite piece of wood, double set triggers and shoots under an inch at 100 yds. I put it through its paces this last season and it did not let me down.

Dustoffer,
I do not have the jaw. I took the boar to my taxidermist for mounting. What he did with it I do not know. My reference to age and calling it a "hoglet" was simply and attempt at humor. I was not really trying to age the beast. If you note my original post, my aging him co-incided with January 1 of 2008 and the date and time which I killed him.
I do log onto texas boars from time to time but do not post there too often.

Whats the old maxim, " I suffer from a sexually transmitted disease that's ultimately fatal.... its called life. Its nice to be able to put a "handle" on our afflictions.
By the way, do you ever have Fabian's there in Crosby process any of your deer or hogs. I've found them to be quite reasonable.
