The last evening of my trip in the patagonian mountains we asked the farm worker where we can see pigs as we have already hunted several red stags. He told us that in a nearbye spring creek, up in the mountain, there were some wild apple trees and that pigs visit the place often. So around 6pm we sat up in the hill waiting to see if something shows up. The evening was rainy and the farmworker told us that it was ideal to see pigs. After an hour we saw a lonely boar walking down to the creek from the hill infront us. When he reached the bottom he start wallowing in a mud spot but the tall trees there unable us to see him clearly enough to risk a shot so we just sat there silently waiting to see what happen. Finally, after some minutes that seems hours he moved up the creek and walked into an open. In that moment my hunting buddy took the shot with his 3006 Remington ADL using Factory Remington ammo 150 grains corelockt. It's funny how sometimes we talk for hours about this or that premium bullet when the plain corelockt is more than enough in normal game at normal distances     L | ||

Excellent hog and excellent pictures and story. You are correct, the old out off date remington Core-Loct still accounts for a lot of game. Thanks for sharing with us.  Even the rocks don't last forever. | |||

Thank guys, Indeed is was a very big boar, the biggest I have seen so far. At least pure blood. Everyone there estimated the weight between 200 and 220 kilos...that's aprox. 400 lbs I think. It was not a monster, but it was a VERY big pig by my standards. Maybe the biggest I will ever see. But We must keep in mind that I hunted it in a place where nobody hunts them, up in the mountains, where they can get old, with lots of food from dead cattle, apples, pinetrees seeds, etc, etc. While hunting there, the pigs ate the deer's carcass that were left in the fields in two days !!! Old animals grow big, the thing is that we never wait so much long to shoot them....  L | |||

Very nice one Lorenzo. You also right on the CL's. I recently dropped the hammer on a nice sized boar using my 25-06 AI with a 120gr CL, that impacted the shoulder shield at close to 3100fps. I figured the bullet would have blown to bits when it hit the hog at only about 110 yards. I was happy to find it on the off side shoulder just through the shoulder blade and against the shield fully expanded and in the classic mushroom. I have a LOT of them in several calibers I have purchased over the years to load for target practice, but after that hog I am rethinking my loads. I have used the 150gr in .308 from my little Ruger Comapct out to 400yds to drop decent hogs with one shot stops time and time again. In fact I decided that since the standard Rem. factory stuff shot so well and did such a fine job on the game I wasn't even going to load for that rifle. Thanks for sharing. Mike / Tx | |||

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.  What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances. | |||
