Can anybody explain why its common practice to remove a boar hogs testicles immediately after killing. My butcher claims that it makes no difference after he's dead.

DoublessI didn't know it was "common practice". I have shot numerous boars and have never castrated. I just removed them during the skinning process. Your butcher is correct.
FWIW, I have several pounds of pure pork summer sausage left from three boars I shot the third week in March. I have fed it to numerous friends, and all are amazed there is no "boar taste".

jawheelerIt's common in this area of LA/MS. Especially the older men insist you have to do this to prevent tainting the meat of a Boar.

KarooOver here we remove the penis and the urine string of warthog to prevent the urine taste. Cut around it and pull it out.
I do not have much experience with warthogs but the ranchers where they shoot them daily insist on doing it, even for those being sold.

DoublessI am really not surprised, just didn't know it was "common". My late father used to insist I cut the metatarsals off any buck I shot, and metatarsals on the ones he shot were all removed when he brought them in. I never was able to convince him he was wasting his time...

UltraMagIts common practice here in Hawaii although im sure its about carrying less weight on your back instead of tainted meat. Also alot of hunters in the hunting clubs weigh thier hogs for the annual competion and hogs must be fully dressed and oysters removed

Hunting its not a Hobby its My Way of Life!!!

Farrier MattNever heard of cutting one once hes dead. We usually bar a trapped hog, so that he cant breed any more. Or bar him and pen feed him some, so he eats better. But it doesnt make any difference, in my opinion, once hes dead.

reddy375I have seen natives do this in India, supposedly not doing this taints the meat! Probably old wives tails but it always produced a laugh.

GatogordoTexas is a big place but I've never heard of the practice in the parts of it I frequent. Since the testicles are internal it really doesn't make much sense once he's dead, they just come off when field dressing/cleaning.

SGraves155The meat is better is they're removed several months or more before they're killed. There a are a few folks who still catch feral hogs and occasionally castrate and release the young boars.
I've never heard of doing it immediately on a dead hog either. Certainly comes off as you're field dressing.

I'm surprised that "natives" in India bother at all with pigs. I have seen (literally) swarms of pigs of all ages wander about towns in India, unmolested. The Hindus won't touch meat of any kind; the Muslims won't touch a pig. So, who is eating them....."cheaters"??

Dago RedNow, it could make the hunt much more interesting if the first shot had to remove the nuts, we have the texas heart shot, we could call it the Louisiana flavor savor or some such.

enyI thought it was a givin that you shot the nuts off first. Regardless of what you call it, I want to know what the minimum caliber required to do this at 600 yards is.
