Ok, why am I the authority on pigs, well I raised and showed domestic hogs through FFA and FH for 12 years. I have had almost every type of domestic hog available in North America.

HOG RULE NUMBER 1. It's not a European wildboar if it has a belt. The Hampshire or British Belted breed of pig is the black hog with a white belt around his shoulders.

Another forum member with his ahem "trophy wild boar".

HOG RULE NUMBER 2. It's not a European wildboar if it covered in spots. European wild boar do not have spots, domestic hogs in the breeds of Old Spot, Berkshire, and several chinese breeds are spotted not wild hogs.

HOG RULE NUMBER 3. It is not a European wildboar if it doesnt' have cloven feet. Mule foot hogs are a type of feral hog that mutated into having uncloven feet. Here is an example.

HOG RULE NUMBER 4 It's not a wild boar (as in it lives in the wild) if it's over 600 pounds. A 850 pound pig is a well fed hog. Domestic hogs get this big hogs in the wild don't. This example is a super hog, but I am sure he knows where the feeder with the Purina High Octane Show Pig feed is.

HOG RULE NUMBER 5. If it is solid black, and it doesn't have the body shape, it's a cross. Melanistic mutant pigs are uncommon, but it's usually pretty easy to see the difference between a black Spanish blood type pig and a true Euro pig that is solid black. Notice how this sow has some silver hairs on her nose, her baby is pure look at that little watermellon "freishling". This second boar is a Spanish blood boar, notice the lack of silver guard hairs and the more domestic hog body shape.

Unless the hog has the "russian" shape and at least some grizzling of the cheek hairs, I would be hesitant to imply any recent "russian" heritage, but there is no way of knowing for sure. Hogs that are dark, lean, and have erect ears are sold in most sale-barns everyday, without their ancestors having been close to a "russian" for 100's of years. If the hog has any significant amount of wild Eurasian boar in it, it will have almost certainly have the correct shape, and some grizzling.
Whitworth's hog above looks 100% "Russian" to me.

One of my Hunters Video www.huntersvideo.dk DVDs has a hunt in Poland or Hungary where there is a white colored wild boar and it was easy to see it was a domestic-wild hybrid.

I wasn't suggesting that all wild boar in Europe were "pure" stock, but where I hunted this one in Bosnia, I never saw a hybrid. Big Grin

While the drama of having pigs coast to coast is going to be severe, I can't wait until we do.

Pig hunting should be our national hunting sport not whitetails.

Amen to that! I find hog hunting to be more fun than deer -- but that's JMHO!
