I've just been given the oppurtunity to hunt for wild pigs on a friends property.... He doesn't want any guns to be used there however..... This is strictly for MEAT!!!! What method would yield the best-tasting meat in your opinion....SNARE OR A PORTABLE SMALL LIVE-TRAP.... I would need to dispatch the game on the property and would not have the oppurtunity to have it "penned & dispatched".......... Do you think I have any validity in this question concerning the meat.... Or all is just the same.... What are your experiences..... This is all new to me, since my weapon of choice is a rifle, but I can't use it there! Thanks for your responses!!!!!

That's not going to be an easy job, brah. I don't think you can dispatch each and every one of them in a timely fashion. Is your friend anti-gun? In fact because of the logistics, I'd be inclined to decline his offer. Lo do they call to me, They bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla, Where the brave may live forever.

Seems to me the pork tastes better if the animal doesn't have time to turn on it's fight-or-flight system. Since the "Bang-you're-dead" scenario isn't allowed, just catch it in a live trap, feed it a few weeks, let it get nice and contented, then--- Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Late Bloomer, If you snare one it will get to running around like crazy and you will have to have to kill it with a firearm of some type. If you can bait some in a small portable trap they will usually just get in and stand around. You can then get a good stout pole or aluminum conduit and attach a very sharp fish filet knife to it with small bolts and nuts or whatever. You have basically a very sharp spear. We call it a jab stick. You might be better off to remove the knife handle for a better fastening job. Ease it in there and stab him right behind the front leg. It should get the heart and he will bleed out pretty quick. Try to make the direction of the stab toward the front from behind the front leg and you ought to draw plenty of blood. A lot easier to just shoot 'em tho. Merg and what Graves just said. Remember they can't stand the heat so yoou may just have to kill him quick.

LIVE TRAP AND USE A JAB STICK OR COLD STEELE SELLS A BOAR SPEAR THAT WORKS GOOD. DO NOT FEED OUT FERRAL HOGS THEY TURN TO ALL FAT AND NO MEAT BEST IN THEIR NATURAL STATE FOR EATING. VERITAS ODIUM PARIT

I wanted to address the post I'm receiving as of late.... First of all I greatly appreciate all your replies..... The more the better as I can select what will work best in my given situation..... First of all, I'm only going to do trapping maybe once every month or two for smoked-meat... so when the need arises my friend said I could use his property as my go to supermarket..... I think I'm leaning in the direction of what merganser1 and CRUSHER are describing for the time-being, because that's the way I had kind of imagined it going..... I want to construct a trap using 2" X 4"'s being I'm not a welder of any sorts.... Just so I can start trapping & have some success.... Maybe within the next year or two, I can get a friend to weld an iron one for me. Has anyone ever heard of someone using a trap constructed with wood.... Any other ideas or suggestions..... I would appreciate any info you can give me including preferred baits.... Also, transporting the trap to its location is not a problem..... My friend lives only 5minutes away from me and all I need to do is drive my truck right up to the trail head and off-load it right there next to my truck.... I was thinking of using avocados, mangoes, papayas, and pineapples in and outside the trap as bait and to lure them in. They come to his property eating all these fruits that fall down from his trees already. I also want to create a small area with a water puddle or maybe just a muddy area where they will want to congregate right off the trail. There's not much water in the hills where the pigs live so I was hoping a tiny watering area might be a good idea.... Any more comments, I could really use everyone's input... And things I should consider or re-consider... Thanks again!

On the mainland, we can buy 4'x16' cattle panels for about $16/panel. Three panels should let you make a 4'x 8' trap. Just use wire to hold together. Steve "He wins the most, who honour saves. Trapping pigs isn't very hard, nor does it take an overly sophisticated trap. I have trapped quite a lot of pigs, mostly for relocation. But once trapped they tend to go beserk and can do themselves some damage if the trap isn't very "pig friendly" from the inside. Killing a trapped pig with a spear while not particularly difficult, will not give you the best possible meat. If you just plan to smoke it, this might not be a problem. An animal needs to be as relaxed as possible when it it slaughtered in order to produce the best meat. Penning and feeding a trapped pig is not going to be easy, since they will go beserk every time you go near the trap or pen to feed them and they may not eat much or at all due to the stress of being trapped. I trapped some pigs in a very large pen just yesterday, this an enclosure with a diameter of about 40 meters and they still knocked themselves up pretty bad, leaving blood spatter in several spots where they had tried to get out. you may not get top quality steak and roast, but for jerky and the like I don't think it would matter. Also I don't know that most people even notice the difference. I only do now after years of experimenting and firmly believe that even should/lung shot animals produce lesser eating than head shot, quickly bled and properly butchered game. Go ahead and trap the pigs, kill them however you see fit and post the results.

you dont need to be a welder just make a little pen about the size of a bedroom useing t posts and hog pannels the 4 by 10 work good use 4 posts over a 10 ft pannell use bailing wire to wire the pannells together and to the posts. put the posts n the outside of the pen. leave a gate in the pen about 4 ft wide. peg the pannells to the ground between every 2 posts. make a gate with a large hog door in it with a pannel that can be triggered to drop like a guillotine pannell falls in place straight down like a window closes. use a trigger mech and rope across the middle of the pen. put the food at the back of thepen leave the gate open and feed the hogs in the pen then when you want one to eat close the gate and set the trap. they dont jump so no roof needed dirt floor is fine if you check often enough to keep from digging out. you can use a pannell on a wooden frame to squeze them to one side after caught to make them easy to stabb or clubb I have killed them with a ballpien hammer and cant seem to taste the difference. let the meat soak in ice water in the cooler a couple of days change the water regular and keep covered with ice looks perfect and pink/white when done that should be clear as mud pm me and ill try and help VERITAS ODIUM PARIT

Aloha Late Bloomer Got your PM about this subject so I'll get back to you on that. As far as snare or trap I do both depending on the situation and the pigs im trying to catch. I trap on avg 3-400 pigs annually here on Oahu so I do it alot. Due to the fact that you can drive to the spot etc. id say YOU GOT IT MADE BUDDY !!!!! Nah joking aside box trap would be good. Like others have said some do tend to bang themselves up fighting to get out. I'll get ahold of you and we can talk story about it. Think I might have some materials laying around as well need to check though. Take it easy and happy huntin' Hunting its not a Hobby its My Way of Life!!!

here is a pic of one of my s traps you can see the trigger gate and a reset gate so you can catch more than one no bottom in these so you can flip it over off them after you stab or shoot em. VERITAS ODIUM PARIT

That's waht I always did. A little corn makes that wild pork much better than store bought. You can also worm them & castrate the boars when you catch em. I found @ 4 weeks was enough to get them ready for the grill. "You can lead a horticulture, ... but you can't make 'er think" Florida Gardener
