GWB,
You are definitely lucky nobody got hurt!

I've carried a ton of different guns over the years, including a Glock 10mm, and I always keep coming back to the .44 Mag. S&W wheel guns. The last 4 I’ve carried had the moon-clip modification. It’s the ONLY way to go for what I do. I’ll also never carry a single action, double action is the only thing that’s kept me for getting nailed on several occasions. Currently I’m carrying a S&W 329 lightweight .44 Mag. It’s brutal to shoot but really fun and easy to carry.

The Smith revolvers put up with the dirt, blood, mud, sand and just keep on working. I've found if I get caught having to make a longer shot across a canyon to finish off a pig I stand an infinitely better chance of making it with a nice Smith with the adjustable sights and awesome trigger than any other handgun I've tried.

Whatever gun you carry, keep it in your HAND when you're trailing blood and make sure you know where everyone is in your party. If someone in your party is unarmed, inexperienced, has limited mobility or can't SHUT UP... leave them behind and tell them all about it later.

The noise thing is a pet peeve of mine. Don't give away your position when trailing a wounded animal. In fact the clients I ask to stay back I'll tell them ahead of time that I won't be answering if they yell to see where I am (obviously unless the trailing is over for one reason or another). I’ve found it’s extremely difficult to safely trail blood in tight cover with more than one person. And you’re much more likely to keep spooking the animal ahead of you. If it’s open country then the more people the better.

A couple months ago I had a client (unarmed) who insisted on crawling through the brush behind me while I looked for a wounded pig (a sow so I didn't think it would get dangerous but I still was ready) and this goofball kept answering his cell phone. I was about ready to give it a toss down the canyon and then I found the pig... dead thank goodness. Only someone from LA would have to narrate their pig hunt over the phone while in progress. I might be “busy†the next time that group calls. Smiler

Great posts, guys! Thanks for sharing your vast experiences. Kyler, I'm from LA originally and have never narrated a hog hunt on my cell phone! jumping

Again, never been charged, but I always plan for it.

About half of my clients and some of my best friends are from LA so I didn't mean it as a blanket statement, but there is definitely a different mentality for a lot of those So Cal folks.

Heck, I probably spoke out of turn... he wasn’t even speaking English so who knows what he was talking about. Maybe I don't want to know.

Years ago, We had a boar charge us in Tennessee, but the dogs were right behind, and I grabbed a limb of a tree and swung up to let him get by. Moments later, he bayed up with his ass against a stump and I was able to shoot him without endangering the dogs. Will try to find the old picts.

HaHa! Kyler, I couldn't agree with you more! Have of the country's freaks congregate in LaLa Land -- sadly enough, they're not natives! No offense taken!

Still want to schedule a hunt with you. Problem is that I don't visit Cali much anymore -- hell, I went to Cal Poly for a couple of years -- that's when I should have taken advantage of my proximity to your hunting operation......

Steve, try and dig up the photos if you can. Would love to see 'em!

Kyler you speaketh the truth!

Having been on two hunts with you. I have seen your side arm. I have wounded an animal and lost sight of you (I had been instructed to stay back if sight was lost and I did). I have been "shished". I have been scolded in the most polite manner for slamming the truck door at first light.

At the end of the day....I dont think you have spoken out of turn but rather documented your experiences as they went down. Sometimes the truth is just what it is and if the guy is from LA then he was from LA. I have also heard a few storys you have told about hunters from Bako and you werent out of turn.

Just keep telling the truth.

Thanks for the fun!

All I can say, gentlemen, is, if I had been the guy on the other side of that hog from that shooter, he'd have gotten a grown man's ass kicking when I got to him! I don't see how that guy wasn't shot, even several times! Eeker

This is the PH/guide's worst fear! Getting shot by someone trying to shoot an animal in close! This an example of a real dip-sh:t shooter, I would never hunt with again! thumbdown thumbdown thumbdown

I've been "charged" several times over the years but never agressively, more like I was in the wrong place at wrong time. The areas I hunt are pretty dense with vegetation with the various trails actually created and maintained by pigs with their regular use. Pig are creatures of habit so will blindly run down these trails they know so well to escape danger. When these pigs "charged" me they were actually in a panic trying to escape from danger (us) and I was standing on their trail blocking their escape though not intentionally, they plow right thru me like a linebacker, knock me on my butt and keep on going, not even sure if they recognised me as a threat before impact. No back-up handguns allowed here in "paradise".

Howzit Hawaiian_Hunter

Handguns are allowed they just have to be carried in plain view and not covered up.

There are some caliber restrictions depending on type/style of hunting youre doing gun vs dog etc. and for semi-auto pistols barrels need to be at least 4 1/2" long I believe but check the regs to make sure.

Aloha and Happy Huntin'

Aloha Mag, It is my understandng (and please correct me if i'm mistaken) that you can either have a rifle or a handgun but not both, you cannot have a handgun as a back-up to your rifle, bow, etc. only one mode for killing allowed. Do you know what public hunting areas on Oahu allow handgun hunting? I'm moving back to Oahu from Maui after a 12 year absence and not sure of all the new regulations there. Mahalo, Ji

I called up 2 turkeys for this boy this past spring that carried a cellphone. I had made him turn the dayum cellphone off but wouldn't ya know it, he had and alarm set that went off right as 2 longbeards rounded the back of our blind.

Take the battery off the phone or make them leave it at the truck. It's the only way to make sure.

Reminded of that movie where the African guide is closing in on a huge bull elephant and the guy's wristwatch alarm goes off causing the elephant to charge and trample the guy.

Im pretty sure that all public areas allow handgun as long as the reg's are followed.

If you have any questions about Oahu let me know. I can look it up for you if you have any ?'s.

When I was hunting hogs, with gun I was never charged, but since I started with the knife, have faced two so far, both mine or the giudes fault, but still a +P pucker factor. Both of us carry a handgun as backup and used once the second time I was able to grab a leg as he went by and applied the knife correctly that time

Aloha Dom, You ever hunt Kahana Valley? I used to over 20 years ago, wait until mangos in season then get there early before sunrise and wait for pigs to come eat mangos. Had a topo map with trees all marked but gone for years.

Aloha Bradda Ji,

Oh Yeah grew up hunting there RELIGIOUSLY!!! Every weekend. Mostly because my grandfather lived in Kaaawa Valley and we would crossover into what my dad calls "Kualoa bowl" and hunt from there or get dropped off and either hunt the loop trail (upper road) with cowboy gate or Jesse's side (Lower road) crossing the dam first thing in the morning SUCKED cold wet feet all day but in Kahana it doesnt matter cuz your feet wont stay dry for long LOL!!!

Yeah Mango season just pau along with guava and mountain apple although still get some late season kine here and there. Lilikoi is also on right now so the pigs kinda healthy right now some sows are kinda run down due to weaning thier young.

Well my bradda thanks for sparking some very fond memories of hunts so long ago in a beautiful place.

Good shooting and Happy huntin',

Dom

Bradda Ji,

I forgot to say that if you hunted Kahana 20 yrs ago its likely we met or passed each other etc during that time. If you can remember your hunts back then if you ever came across a blue 57 willy's pick up with a dog cage in the back it was us.

I Hunted there from '78-'95. My Dad hunted there from the late 50's.

Aloha!!!

All the stories about wild boars charges, were on wounded boars that charged to escape or escaping sweeped away the peolpes on theyr path. In Italy I've read a fact on a local newspaper of last Saturday, two hunters, have been attacked by a boar, one of the hunters has been seriously wounded to a leg, the other one only knoked down and out. When the rescuers have been there founded a wounded hunter, another hunter full of aches and pains and a dead boar at 30 meters. The Newspaper did nost say if the boar have been deadly wounded by the two hunters or by someone else of the hunting equipe. But the keyword to read and understand the fact is wounded, normally the boars escaped as fast as they can.

Anyways, been real busy lately and tonight just trying to catch up with all that's going on over here at AR...

Man, wasn't Greg's story and pics awesome...a whopping 567 pigs or something like that...Wow, I would just about pay anything to have an experience like that!

It couldn't have happened to a better guy, Greg has been a big help to me and has educated me when I needed some help several times..he's a super guy!

BTW, what's up and what's going on??? Give me a PM when you got the chance... jumping

Take care and God Bless,

Hey Ro! How are you man? 4-month hog hunting acreer and you're already going a third time -- I would say that you are off to a stellar start!! Good, get as many friends involved as possible. It's good for our sport, and a good time for all involved (except for the pigs of course!).

Yeah, Greg's hunt was nothing short of awesome! Would love to get the opportunity!

PM on the way, Ro!

Aloha Roland,
Best of luck and good hunting end of this month.

Stephano,
What exactly does "Waidmannshiel" mean? I believe that it is German and is some kind of salutation to hunters? Please be so kind as to interpret.

Thanks in advance,

Geoff,
excuse for the delay, I'seen only to day your question
The litteral translation should be "Hello/HI Man of the Woods" the answer of the hunter is Waidmanns danke, thet should be "Thank you by the Man of the Woods".

A German hunter probably can be more correct than me, and I am sorry if I am makeing wrongs and errors, but I read and heard other versions where Waidmanns/Man of the Woods should be a sort of divinity or lord of the woods and friend of the hunters. The greeting become in this case something like "Hello/HI in the name of the Man of the Woods" and the answer "Thank in the name of the Man of the Woods".

It is used as pure greeting between hunters, between the normal people when meet a hunter/hunters, and when the wished prey is bagged as congratulations.

In the last case there are particular and traditional rituals to carry out, but I declare that they must be described by specialists.
