Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is about 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million.)
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is about 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.

Therefore, statistically, doctors are approximately 900,000 % more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'


Fact: not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one doctor.

Please, alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers, for fear that the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention...

Your statistics on physician negligence is pretty accurate. However, I believe those 1,500 firearms related deaths should be attributable to negligence and not accidents. I would further add that it would bolster the argument to add all firearms related deaths at around 29,000. Even then the comparison is, for lack of a more sensitive term, negligible, in terms of raw numbers.

And if you remove deliberate suicidal acts?

As a doc, I think their numbers on physician related accidental deaths are vastly inflated, but what do I know?

I have a colleague who is a Doc (Shrink) and a lawyer both... and a proud PETA member.

So, who's more dangerous, a Doc/Hunter or a Doc/Lawyer? Anyone?

The wife and I are going on our fist safari in August. Some of the folks at her work have been asking if we are really going to kill animals. She says “We will stalk them, kill them, cut their heads off and hang them on a wall in our den.â€

So far nobody has had any other questions on what we will be doing in Africa.

I think the doctor/lawyer/PETA pretty much takes the trifecta. Only slightly less lethal than VX gas.

On a serious note, I do think those numbers are bogus, but I am not a statistician. Not sure what they qualify as caused by the doctor. Not being able to save the paint sniffer that crashed their car at 110 mph? Infant death from crackhead mom? who knows.

Well, ask any doc about their intern days being worked to death in a hospital... If anything, my guess would be that the numbers are on the low side -- just from the natural tendency to cover for other members of a profession, if nothing else.

I doubt those statistics include post-op infections (admittedly, it was in a bad hospital, but I've seen operating rooms -- while being operated on -- that, if a kitchen, were far too filthy to have ever passed a health inspection.)

As I was bleeding like a stuck pig, I didn't really have time to make other arrangements, although I did have my father try to see if we could get out vet to stitch me up (his operating rooms are considerably cleaner.)

They say; "figures don't lie but liers figure"! And then there is the; "Truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth"

So if for instance the number of crooks make appointments with a gun owner for a regular check up, as compared to sick people that go to a doctor we could admirably raise the overall numbers on the gun side.

And if we used doctors with the same care and caution that we use firearms I'd bet the numbers would go down on their side, likely the costs would too!

Meanwhile to the incinuated point of the topic;

Given that "The only way animals die of old age in african wilds is if being too old to get away counts!"

So a discription of a giraffe being eaten on for as much as a day or 2 before death is generous enough to visit trumps a bullet in the sympathy section... everytime!
