I have been thinking of him this morning -- of the unforgettable images of him with his lion and with a hyena, God rest his soul. I see there is a compilation of African cartridge profiles that he and Charlie Haley put together based on material from African Hunter. Is this a useful book to have?

I had a message from his daughter a few days ago.

They are living in Sweden and thankfully doing great.

The last time I visited with Don in person was at SCI 2007. John & James Rosenfels, Nigel Theisen, Paddy Curtis, and a few other friends were having dinner at Sterling Steakhouse in Reno.

We were inbibing large quantities of Sterling's fine namesake vintage. Don walked in looking for someone else, found us, and helped us rid Sterling of the wine stockpile.

At the time of his death, I believe he was working for Norma, which is of course based in Sweden.

I always enjoyed his writing.

Yes, he was working at Norma when he passed away.

He was cremated there and his family flew through Dubai back to Zimbabwe.

Because of an injury to his shooting shoulder that limited his ability to handle heavy recoil, Ganyana was a big fan of the 9.3x62mm.

after few discussions in what he called still Salisbury the shoulder was not the problem and he has proved with no doubt that the 9.3x62 was already a potent caliber before the increase of the speed. remember the caliber was created and used before the 375hh and was way more popular all across africa up to the end of the second wwii ... even kenya authorized the users of the 9.3x62 to still hunt the big 5 ...

I meant to answer the question about the book.

It's really a brief pamphlet containing several of Ganyana's AH articles from over the years on classic African calibers.

I enjoyed it. The articles are not technical but are written more from a historical perspective and provide a lot of interesting information.
