I don't know how many of you are familiar with this DVD: Mountain Buffalo - Safari Press I saw it a few years back - then on video obtained at the Dortmund hunting show (the largest in Germany). I think the video came directly from Rainer Joesch (the PH featured in the DVD) then, and I have not seen it available in the US before now. Maybe I'm wrong in that assumption?? Anyway, if you have not seen the DVD, it is not terribly expensive, and presents a different angle to hunting buffalo - difficult terrain, difficult conditions. If you enjoy buffalo hunting, you are likely to enjoy this DVD. (Disclaimer: I have absolutely no connection to either Safari Press, Rainer Joesch or any other organization or person involved with this DVD). - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... "Buffalo Fever" is also my all time favourite buff video. But I had not seen the Mountain Buffalo title generally available before, thus my post. Besides, there is probably room for more than one buffalo DVD in a hunting library... - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I was thinking about the Mountain Buffalo DVD just this morning. It sounds like my preferred style of hunting. Can anyone compare it to the Buffalo Fever DVD or Boddington's two DVDs? Is the Buffalo Fever one called "The Cape Buffalo" by Hunter's Video? I'm also curious about the PH Rainer Josch. I can't find much info about him in English. It seems to be in German mostly. _______________________________

I had emailed and spoken on the phone with Rainer about this hunt a few years ago (04), combined with some cultural interaction with the Masai and site seeing around the Crater. He was able to put the entire package together, and it was quite impressive. The hunting sounded physical and exciting, not for a first-time buffalo hunt but ideal for somebody who has hunted a few different areas/countries and is looking for something unique in what must be an awesome setting. I instead opted to take my sons to Zimbabwe for an ele bull hunt w/Buzz Charlton, but have little doubt that this trip with Rainer would have been a good one. His email at the time was: rainerjoschsafaris@iwayafrica.com (I don't know what he is up to these days).

At Reno there was a safari company called Far & Away that had a booth, in that booth they were playing a video of buffalo hunting in the mountain forests of Losimingori, which I believe is the same general area where the mentioned video was shot, (it may be the same video for all I know)nevertheless the video was fascinating. I was very interested in the hunt, there was a man in the booth that was in the video (I later reasoned that he was a client of this company)shooting a very large buffalo just yards away in what looked like hunting bongo in the rain forest. The video was very intense and unique. Anyway I tried to talk to the man from the video and he was an arrogant prick that I guess didnt feel like I had on an expensive enough watch to talk to him. There was a woman in the booth also that said there would be someone there shortly that could talk to me about the hunt. I picked up a brochure but didnt go back. Here is my take on the comparison, others may have a different opinion. Yes, I think "The Cape Buffalo" is the same DVD (video) as the one we call "Buffalo Fever" - which if I remember correctly is a title used on the DVD itself, at least in the Danish version: http://www.huntersvideo.dk/index.php?partnerid=&lang=UK&pt=videos&video_id=3 As I mentioned above, this is my all time favourite - simply based on the quality of footage. This DVD also hits a pretty good balance between showing bulls killed (the ultimate action part - sorry if I sound bloodthirsty...), and showing other parts of the hunt, the landscape etc etc. The Boddington DVDs are also worth having, but they are quite a bit more commercial than the one above. On top of that; once you have seen "The Cape Buffalo" DVD, the footage of Boddington DVDs seems a bit, how shall I put it, pedestrian. The Boddington DVDs are more instructional, but also somewhat less action packed - in fact, at times they are a bit long winded. The Boddington DVDs play the longest - most bang for your $$$? The Mountain Buffalo DVD is probably the least commercial. The footage is not as professional as in "The Cape Buffalo", but the terrain and how the buffalo are hunted make up for a lot of that. Conclusion: they are all worth adding to your library... - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Thanks MHO. That's a good comparison for me. I have both of Craig's buffalo DVDs so I understand what you are saying there. Sounds like I would definitely like the Mountain Buffalo DVD. Any more comments on the Hunter's Video DVD? Thanks Bill for the comments on Rainer. I'll email you offline about it. _______________________________

Taling about Mountain buffalo, I think I am correct to say that , outside of the Caprivi Strip, the only buffalo in Namibia are on the Waterberg Plateau, and that they are monsters. Has anyone been there to see them? The top of the Plateau is, of course, essentially flat. PH Cornie Coetzee has an interesting story about sneaking in to see them. I ordered Rainer's DVD today. Anyone know if Rainer and Kai-Uwe went through with their elephant DVD? _______________________________

Bill, you should have taken that hunt when I told you about it the good hing is that Rainer is still active and can still put such a package together. He is trying to get more involved in making videos with focus on the conservation aspects of hunting. I think his next project will be an educational video about the training of indigenous TZ to become professional hunters. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. I've got an email out to Rainer to ask about this type of hunt. I'm also curious about his project status with Kai-Uwe on elephant. That would be an interesting video! Seth, since you're back in the States, just let me borrow some DVDs. Also, check your PMs. _______________________________

Here's a picture of a buff I saw while riding up on Monduli Mountain in Tanzania. I hear hunting them up there is fun though the size of bulls is not as large as you'll find in other parts of Masailand. TGT has a nice camp up there:
