Whatever I decide to take will most likely be a European Mount...

If you are having a European mount I would go for a Black.
- Especially as they are very localised, unlike the blues.

I have pretty good representitive animals of both species. I enjoy the "backward" aspect ot the Black... Horns going forward, mustache above the nose, etc. Here is my best of the animal that God used left over parts to make!

L. David KeithIf you have the opportunity to take a Black Wildebeest, I'd do it. They are now a permit animal and there is pressure to put them off limits. Good hunting, David

If you have a chance at taking a black, I would do so. It seems that almost any hunting operation has blue on the menu, but not everyone has a black listed. Good luck in deciding!

jshoneyHere is a Black that I european mounted. I chose an older bull with heavy bosses and worn down horn length and couldnt have been happier.

And thank you for the advice about taking a BLACK while I'm there...
I love the hide on the BLUE and it was a bit cheaper, but I'll go for a BLACK because of the reasons you folks have mentioned.
Plus I will do a European Mount I think the display will be that much more impressive...
I appreciate your help and advice and I will take it!

DesertRamWhy not go for both? I hunted a black wildebeest bull, then took a "management" blue wildebeest cow, which was much less than a trophy bull but still yielded a great looking hide.

IgnobilisThey are both magnificent, crazy animals that can be difficult to get if hunted fairly ie - they're not as stupid as they look. To answer your questions: Blue wildebeest weigh about 220kg compared to about 170kg or less for a black wildebeest. They are notoriously tough animals - first shots count. Their habits are pretty different: Blue W tend to prefer bushveld, Black W grassland (long shots). A 270 will do it (premium bullets) for Black W, but a 30 calibre or similar is about right for Blue W. A lot of guys prefer to use their 375's though. I have skull mounts of both & they are superb. Their skins make very impressive floor rugs. There is no shortage of either animal in South Africa - hunters have assured that they are plentiful. Whatever you decide, you'll have a great hunt.

SGraves155My understanding is that the blue is a bit more difficult to hunt. The black wildebeest and the blesbok both have a bit of a reputation for stupidity, and both were nearly exterminated by market hunters, before sportsmen came to their rescue.

If the blues are hanging-out with zebra, they will be tough to get close to.

Tim CarneyMust admit I have skull mounts from both blue and black wildebeeste. My lack of wall space helped decide that European mounts are more elegant than shoulder mounts of these two.
But, as was noted above, be sure to get a rug mount if you go for a skull mount. Have the animals face included as they have lots of character, and make a decision from the outset whether your rug mounts will be on velvet or not. I'm now a convinced that on velvet looks better and keeps the skin laying flat.

StonecreekI wasn't hunting for score, but this old fella surprised the farm owner with his mass and score, which went well into the Gold. The reference book the farm owner used shows the live weight of both a red hartebeest and a black wildebeest at 180 kilos, or 395 lbs. A big blue bull will be a little larger. The black makes a tremedous European mount.

Taking two just MIGHT happen...The budget I got to work with ain't the greatest but from small kid time the Wildebeest has always fascinated me...Marlon Perkins and Mutual of Omaha was too incredible to watch every Sunday evening...You remember them days!

AKsheephunterHowzit bruddah Squeeze, I actually took 3 wildebeest total, I also took a cow for the hide to get rugged out. Not sure where you hunting, but I hunted down south in the Mpumalanga Province, yeah was starting to get cold in the mornings (they are starting their Fall season)but warms up during the day. Its easy to get hooked on hunting Africa, Gotta go back next year for a Kudu and Gemsbok.

CA Safari HunterI have a black and my father has a blue. If I was going to get one just for a euro mount, I would get the blue and make a rug with the rest.
In my opinion, the blue wildebeest makes the best looking rug out of all the African game animals.
