Why go all that way and limit yourself to only 2 more?

If you think of it in terms of, "I'm spending $ 8,000 to get to this point (your fixed cost) and shooting a warthog is 20% more animals for only 4.3% more money" (your marginal cost) you can't afford not to!

On our upcoming buffalo hunt we're investing about $ 14,000 to shoot the first buffalo. The second one is $ 990. That's 100% more buffalo for 7% more money. Where else can you shoot a buffalo for 7% of the cost of a buffalo hunt? How can you not take a deal like that? Big Grin

Don't limit yourself. I am in the same situation for a hunt booked in Namibia in 2009. On the list I would take a:

Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Mountain Zebra, Hyena
Impala, Blesbuck, Springbuck, Warthog.

It also depends on if you plan on ever getting back again. We had a person in camp with us this year with no plans on ever returning to Africa. He went wild and shot 19 animals. I watched him shoot a giraffe. Now I want one too.

Black Wildebeest & Springbock - you won't see them in many other places in Africa

P.S: IMO I would add at least one warthog (just can't imagine safari without them Smiler )

Only two? I think a zebra skin is one of the better trophies and I'll go eclectic and suggest the lynx, what a great full mount that could be.

Mt Zebra (much nicer than the plains) and the Kalahari Springbok. Bascially these two are available in the natural area only in Namabia. Well maybe in Bostswana but oh the cost.

I'll make your selection a bit easier by suggesting which you should NOT take in Namibia:
Blesbok and black wildebeest are not endemic there at all. These are introduced species. Period. You may as well go hunt them in Texas. thumbdown

Unless you are hunting in the far north east (Caprivi) you could add waterbuck and Tsessebe to the 'Not to be taken on this trip' species. thumbdown

It remains your choice though, if you wish to hunt artificially introduced species: Your money, your hunt, you choice! My advice is always to not hunt artificially introduced species that are not native to the area.

To be positive, I'll add that mountain zebra is 'only' available in Namibia - so go for one while you are in that country! You never know, maybe on your next trip you go to hunt the Free State, the natural home of both black wildebees and blesbok, but where there is no hope of getting a non-introduced mountain zebra.

As far as your last choice goes: Listen to the argument about incremental cost and totally overspend your budget! Big Grin

Enjoy the trip!

Given only 5 animals total I'd add a springbok and Mountain zebra as they are indigenous to Namibia.

Good advice there from Andrew. Very few will know the difference between zebra, but you will. $810 for a Mt. Zebra is very reasonable, and a sport hunted trophy from Namibia is the only way you're gonna get it. Definately a springbok, and I'd probably add a nice hartebeest.

I'd stay away from black-faced impala as well as cheetah, since they are non-importable. Also, they list hyena but the brown is endangered and they probably don't have spotted where you will be going.

I'm going to Nambia in May and here is what the PH and I have settled on. One of each, Kudu, Gemsbuck, Springbuck, Red Hartebeast, Mountain Zebra, Warthog, Baboon, Jackel and 25 birds. Total cost $5900 all inclusive excluding airfare.

I may trade the Hardebeast for an Impala. Not sure yet.

I would add mountain zebra, warthog, springbok and hartebeest to your list. Just because you have a list doesn't mean you'll have the opportunity to shoot them all. And be prepared to say yes or no when something that isn't on your list pops up and your PH is telling you to shoot.

I would add mountain zebra and giraffe to the package. I didn't think I wanted a giraffe during the planning stages of the hunt, but after seeing them and learning how cagey they are in areas where they're routinely hunted, I became very interested. Also, for the price of admission (about a grand), I'd go ahead and add springbok and red hartebeest. If giraffe doesn't interest you, I'd go with mountain zebra and springbok, though hartebeest are pretty fun to hunt too.

I would definitely add a Hartmann's a/k/a mountain zebra to the list.

As others have said, they are indigenous to Namibia and their brownish hued stripes and unique pattern make for a beautiful trophy rug. Quite a contrast to the more widely available Burchell's or plains zebra.

I also agree that springbok, another indigenous species, should be added. They often run in large herds and are sometimes challenging to stalk, since picking out a good ram and getting into position for a shot can be difficult. I have hunted them, but not very hard, and so far do not have one. I have to go back some time to get one.

And then I would also add a red hartebeest, for the same basic reason. They too are indigenous. Some people are ho-hum about hartebeest, but I think they are so impressively ugly and so "African-looking" as to be irresistible. And they do make for a striking head and shoulder mount.

I would add a giraffe if you are interested in taking one, but I have passed on giraffe, since even though they are indigenous to Namibia, I could not get excited about hunting one.

Best of luck!

Mountain Zebra for sure where else are you going to get the real deal. And Red hartebeest talked to KarlS today and he confirmed it you have the best chance to get a decent size from the whole of Southern Africa there.

I would think Zebra - after the info on this thread I see that the Mt. Zebra is the way to go.

Also for me it would be a giraffe.

I would need to do some trophy room ceiling remodeling for a giraffe.

Go ahead.....add a warthog too!!

Zebra, Giraffe, & Warthog - How African is that?

For the 4th I'd take a mountain zebra because it's only available in Namibia.

For the 5th, I'll throw out another suggestion. No animal in particular. Just go out at least one day with no particular animal on the agenda and take a good one of whatever you come across.
