We had our breakfast and headed into seperate directions.
We went looking for buffalo, and Ron and Paul went to look whatever they might come across.
We came across the tracks of an enormous herd, and decided to follow them.
A few kilometers later, we found a small group that must have broken off the large herd. They were all feeding along, and the wind was good. We got behind them, about 100 yards away.
"You see the one behind the termite hill?"
"The one facing away, with a cow between us and him?"
"Yes, that is the one. Shoot him if he gets clear."
"OK, there is another one on the other side of him. If he turn left, great, if he turns right he will disappear behind that cow."
The bull obliged by turning left, and I put a bullet into his chest. He dropped where he stood.
We went to him and added another shot into him. We skinned and cut him up, loaded him in the truck and headed for camp to hjave lunch.
In the afternoon we drove about 40 kilometrs, to an area known to hace sable, eland and roan. We saw a herd of sable, but no shootable bull.
We then saw a lone sable bull by himself. We looked him over, and decided he was still young to shoot.
Walter was with us.
Walter "Why are you all coming back empty handed?"
Me "We did not want to shoot him"
"It is the blackest sable I have ever seen. You are not going to find a blacker one"
"His colour is imamterial. He is too young"
"He cannot be too young if he is black. The young ones are brown"
"Good thing you are not a PH ha?"
"If I was a PH we would have that nice sable sitting in the back of the truck"
It was getting late, and we started our drive back to camp. Alan has a Ruger rifle in 22HMR, which I used to shoot a few spotted chickens for the pot.
We got back to camp, and found that Ron has shot a baboon and a hartebeast.
Had dinner, and headed to the sack.

We are hunting out of the Samase camp. And this morning, our intention is to head over to Malagarasi area to look for sable, roan and eland.
We left camp just after 6, and a few miles out we saw a large herd of topi. We needed some camp meat, so I shot one, and loaded him up into the truck.
Less than a kilometere later someone saw a hyaena far away in the grass.
"Quick, jump out and shoot that hyaena!" Alan said. Jumping out himself with the shooting sticks.
The hyaena was close to 400 yards away, and all I could see was his head and neck. The rest of the body was low in the grass. I aimed above his neck about level with the top of his head and fired. The shot broke his neck. We found him covered in blood from something he has been feeding on, with a full stomach.
We put him in the truck, and continued on our way. We radioed for a truck to meet us to take these animals bnack to camp.
We drove around looking for whatever we might find.
We saw a herd of sable, all cows and young.
We saw a lone buffalo bull running about 1/2 a mile away. We ran after him for a while, but he kept running downwind. We gave up the chase and continued our drive.
We stopped just before midday to have a drink and a bite to eat.
We all shared some hard boiled eggs, flavoured with gun powder! Everyone seems to enjoy this. And the game scout and trackers continued talking about having eaten gunpowder all day. In fact, when we got to the Malagarasi camp for lunch, they insisted we share our gun powder with the staff there too.
On our way to the Malagarasi camp we saw an old sable bull by himself. He was about 50 yards from us, but there was no way that a shot could be taken because of the brush. He ran off and we followed him. A few minutes later he stopped, and I shot him.
We loaded him up and went to the Malagarasi camp for lunch, which they skinned him.

After lunch we headed out again.
We saw a large herd of zebra and roan together. Mostly cows and young ones.
Later one we found a herd of zebra, and decided to shoot one.
We loaded hiom up and headed back to our camp.
We saw a large warthog running from the plain to the tree line. We ran after him, and we kept seeing glimpses of him as he ran in the bush. Eventually he came into a clearing, and I managed put a shot in him while he was running.
We took the customary pictures, and heade back home.
Later on Ron and Paul turned up, empty handed. Apparently the spent all day chasing buffalo, without any success.
Had guinea fowl stew for dinner - one of my favourite camp meals.

We had specific orders from Walter for today, as usually happens, the topi we shot for him to BBQ has been used for something else.
So he told us to go and shoot a topi, kongoni or a reedbuck.
It has to be shot in the neck, without causing any damage to the body!
I told him "Why don't you come along and shoot it the way you want it"
He answered "you do this sort pf thing better than me. Anyway, it is my day of rest, I am going to get up at 9, have a nice shower, and have breakfast at 10"

We got lucky, as we found a topi and I managed to shoot it in the neck. So Walter is making a BBQ tomorrow.
After we had shot the topi, we saw a herd of buffalo with a couple of nice mature bulls in it. We followed them as they fed on the short grass this side of the swamp. We never managed to get very close, and then they got into the long grass in the swamp, and we gave up on them and headed for camp.
We had lunch, then went out again looking for eland and buffalo.
We saw 4 bulls lying under teh shade of a tree close by. And we tried to get a shot, without much success. They ran off, and we ran after them for quite a while, then gave up again and drove back to camp.
We arrived just after sun down, and a few minutes later Ron and Paul arrived too.
They were empty handed as well.
Walter is staying home today, to prepare his BBQ.

We left early as usual, and about 2 hours later we saw a herd of eland that must have been about 70 odd animals.
The wind was great, and we went after them as they fed. We could see a number of younger bulls, but we wanted an older animals with a good tuft of hair on his forehead.
Eventually we found one, and I was able to put a shot into him. He ran a few yards and dropped.
We cut him up, and took him back to camp. Had a snack, and headed out again to the swamp. Looking for waterbuck and buffalo.
Three hours later we decided to head back to camp, as Walter is preparing a BBQ, and he might need help. (he did say our help is the last thing on his mind!).
He said "I will call you when the food is ready!"
Ron is still out.

I am sitting by the fire being let for Walter's BBQ.

Just imagine what you all are missing.

Tomorrow we are moving to the Malagarasi camp. To hunt hippo, crocodile, sitatunga, and of course more buffalo.

The camp staff are moving as we leave in the morning, and we are going to be hunting on the way.

Our tse tse fly repellent is very simple to make.

It is our own patented concoction, but, we are going to share our secret with our AR family.

It is basically a mixture of 50 SPF sun protection, 100% Deet and Mose Dose - a mosquito reppelent, in equal amounts. I think any mosquito reppelent can be used instead of Mose Dose.

It is very early in the morning, and the only two up are Ron and myself enjoying a cup of coffee.

We are all packed, and ready to head out to the Malagarasi camp.

Had a great BBQ last night, then it started ro rain.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that the rain has not messed up the roads.

A couple of years ago we had a bit of muddy fun moving camps.

We had everything packed and ready to go. Walter and Rene volunteered to take our bags to the Malagarasi camp, while we went hunting.
Not far from camp we found the tracks of some bulls, and followed them. After a while we gave up, as they seem to be going in circles.
We gave up and went on our way. We had to drive on the plain where it is so rough we can hardly drive at more than a few Kms an hour.
We got to teh road, and were hardly 100 yards down that when we came across the tracks of a large lion.
We decided to follow it. We went after it for a few hundred yards, then he got into very thick grass. Again, we gave up the chase and headed back to the road.
About a mile down the road, we found the tracks of a few bulls.
Another chase got on the way.
We then found where they got chased by some lions. We followed them, again in circles. We ran into two young lions. One had no main at all, but very large body. The other one was younger.
Obviously, the lions were not succesful in getting their buffalo, so we went after them.
We saw them feeding a few hundred yards away, and the wind was great.
We got to about 70 yards from them, and all we could see was 2 bulls. One was feeding, and the other one was lying down.
We wanted to shoot both. The one that was feeding was feeding towards us, with his head down. I put a bullet into his spine, which dropped him.
The other one first remained lying down, then got up, facing away. I waited until he turned, and dropped him too.
We spent a couple of hours skinning and cutting them up. Then we loaded them and headed to our new camp.
About 15 kilometers from our camp, we were hit by a storm, and got thoroughly soaked. The car was sliding all over the place.
Yesterday Ron shot a heartebeest, and todayt shot a few guinea fowls for the pot.

Good morning hunting as you can see below.

We went in the boat, as the roads close to camp are very wet.

We saw some waterbuck, and went after them, and managed to get this bull.

We then went by boat to the fly camp, and took the truck.

About 30 Kilometers later we found 3 eland bulls under a tree.

One large mature bull, and two younger ones> One of the younger bulls ectually had longer horns than the one we shot. But he was much younger.

We managed to get to about 300 yards from them, and I shot this bull.

He ran a few yards and dropped.

Back to camp, sand a late lunch. And I am writing this just before we head out again in a few minutes.

We are using several cameras, including a Nikon D300s, Panasonic FX100, Sony HX1, Panasonic TZ10.

The photos are much bigger than you see on here, as I have to reduce their size for teh forums.

Walter had us in fits this morning.

He came with us in the boat as we went hunting.
We saw some waterbuck, and went after them, and managed to shoot one. Then we went to the fly camp and got into the truck.

When we saw the 3 eland bulls, standing quite far away, this is what happened.

Walter "Ouf! That bull almost black standing in the shade. He is so big! Ha ha ha, he is also looking at us"

Alan "Do you think that is too far to shoot?"
Me "I prefer to get closer if possible"
Roy "You have shot others further than this one"

The eland took off on a quick walk away from us. The wind was good, so we went after them on the trot!

A few hundred yards further, we got to about 300 yards from them, and I shot one.

Walter comes along in the truck.

"Where is the other one? I heard two shots"
"I only fired one shot, and here he is. Another eland to enjoy eating"

Walter "When are you going to shoot an eronoco for me to BBQ?"

"A what?"
"One of those nice eronocos we had last time we were here"

"What the hell is an eronoco?"
Walter, turning to Alan "Can you get him to shoot an eronoco for a BBQ?"

By this time I was laughing so much, tears are coming down my cheeks!

Alan, laughing his head off "You mean an Oribi?"

Walter "YES, that is the one. The name does not matter"

"It does matter, because I have to write it in the game quota book. And we have no quota for eronocos yet. Ha ha ha ha "

The following photoes show the Malagarasi River, with endless papyras.

You can also see Hessa's Bambam sitting on the eland. She wanted to come hunting with us, but, because is at school right now, she sent Bambam to keep our company.

Bambam goes with us every day.
You will see more Bambam advetures in my complete report after we get back home.
