fairgameLion takes Roan - photos
A couple of days ago and whilst on safari me and my hunter were tracking up some Roan on the hopes of securing a good bull. Two younger animals split off and ran back behind us only to be pounced on by two Lions who were following the same beasts.
Never have come across a photo of a Lion with a Southern Roan and here is some pictures with one of the Lions with his unusual kill.
We were lucky to take a superb old bull a few days later and I just wonder how many Lions he had outpaced during his tough life?

eyedocLucky break to be in the right place at the right time. You certainly made the most of your opportunity. Very nice photos !
We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

SGraves155That lion has a very unique look to him---Mohawk and giant sideburns!

BakesIf a buffalo looks at you like you owe him money, that lion looks at you like he's coming to collect!

A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

My thoughts too.
That particular lion looks like a real mean killer.

PoyntmanLet's hope you get quota back on those fantastic Zambian cats! That is a serious looking beast. Wonderful capturing of his face and the yellow deadly eyes of a true predator

FrostbitOK, let's push this thread to ten pages. How old is that Lion?
Nice pics Andrew.

lavacaGreat pics and story.
Tanks raised an interesting question that none of our resident experts have responded to.
How old is he?
I'm no expert, but I'll throw in and get humilated by those who know better. Based on the first picture I was going to say 3-4, but after the later pictures, I'd say 2-3, with a lot of potential?
Hope those with more knowledge weigh in.

Photo 2 and 3 are of the second Lion and these Lion are brothers and frequent visitors to Royal Kafue. To be honest they looked very similar last year.
Looking at their history plus the bulk of body and lack of spot pattern. These Lion are 4+ year olds. The mohican style mane maybe genetic?
There is a huge resident MGM pride male who has 4 oversized females in tow and the duo will occasionally push them out of the area with some impressive roaring. The big male is currently avoiding confrontation but will likely succumb to these brothers.

No Jim these are too young. I suspect one could very well be the youngster we had on bait that year. I have two separate brutes - one with the pride and an other who hangs around with a single female and that very well maybe the others you speak of. However between me and the other private areas there are lots of Lion.
Cheers mate

Jack D BoldWow. The look in that lion's eyes put an iceball in my gut from 10,000 miles away. A different world when you are not on the top of the food chain. Thanks for sharing those photos Andrew. My vote for the Photo of The Year...

376 steyrI will say he is at least three years old and still too young to shoot.

surestrikeI guess that lion simply doesn't realize how large the trophy fee on a roan is. Bad manners.

Steve416Great photo's Andy.
Remiinds me of the few nervous moments we had when we found fresh lion tracks in the tracks of the superb roan bull we were following after my first shot.
Seems that Roan are definitely on the menu.
