We can only blame ourselves if this goes unchallenged... with a big enough voice, we can make a difference.

Chris,

As you and I discussed this morning, your comments are spot on. I have sent my email and also updated my blog, Facebook Page, and Twitter feed with the information and links. I hope others will do the same to get the message out!

. . . and complete the section to ask six friends to respond too. The job is only half complete (or less) if each person just uses the link to send letters to their Congressional delegation.

Mike - I sent your letter out to all of our email contacts. Appreciate you taking the time to type it up.

SCI Action Done! Every one on this site should also send a personal letter and contact their representatives by phone. When I was stationed in Wyoming I had an occasion to talk with Senator Al Simpson about an issue. During the conversation he told me that a personal letter (hand written) was worth a thousand signatures on a petition. Well we all have computers with some sort of Word Perfect now and I'll bet that your representative will have higher regard for your personal letter than a form letter. It goes back to commitment, how important is this issue to you and how much time are you willing to devote to it.

In addition to just writing Congress (which is an absolute necessity by the way) we should all be talking to our non-hunting friends and co-workers. The general public believe that all Elephants are endangered or nearly gone and have absolutely no idea how much damage and conflict is caused by mis-management of these populations and how they will destroy their habitat and create a death-spiral without proper wildlife management.

The abuses and misuse of the ESA and CITES have convinced the ignorant general public that all of these species are on life support so they think that these efforts support remnant populations instead of understanding that these are complex management and human/wildlife conflict issues where regulated hunting plays a critical role.

Here's the boiler plate response from Lisa Murkowski. Am I imagining this or could this response be a one size fits all for animal rights as well as "wildlife trafficking"?

That was a waste...

Dear James:

Thank you for contacting me about wildlife trafficking. I appreciate hearing from you and having the opportunity to respond.

I respect and enjoy the outdoors and nature and believe we must be responsible for protecting our wildlife as well as our pets. There is no doubt that protecting the rights of animals is extremely important, and Congress must continue to work toward that goal.

Should the Senate consider legislation regarding this issue, I will keep your comments in mind. Again, thank you for contacting me.

United States Senator
Lisa Murkowski

My congresswoman, Ann Wagner, thanked me for my interest in animal welfare, especially my moral stewardship of my pets....ad nauseum. I wrote a letter within the area provided by SCI's written memorandum and this is the response I received. Mentioned USFWS several times etc...but obviously they didn't bother to read it. She is conservative but, obviously, not in touch. Pathetic.

Hmm? Earlier today, I was going to take time from my busy schedule to write my CongressWOMAN, the dishonorable Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas 18th Congressional District) regarding the importation ban, but my CongressWOMAN was busy attending a Democratic party fund raising event here in Texas along with Dictator Nobama. Apparently, the fund raising event was held immediately after they both attended the Fort Hood Memorial Service. Cheers!

Out of touch with reality.
Doesn't surprises me. Election year, so they could care less about this particular issue, because they have bigger fish to catch and that is why USFWS announced it like that.
They knew no one cares in congress will touch it right now
All those responses are generic templates sent back by staff.

UEG: I did follow up in a civil manner. I don't believe that the original message ever reached her as I have spoken to her underlings on several occasions but never to her. Doesn't excuse the response I received. I will be calling her office in DC as I believe that it will bear more fruit.

Zig, just read your thread and it is certainly more informative to this issue than anything else I have read. I will copy it and send it to my Congresswoman on the oft chance she will read it. The flip side to her response to me is that I call in to the townhall chats that she sponsors and will have an audience listening to our conversation and will be able to talk to her one-on-one.

I think we are on the wrong track with any hopes that Congress could understand or mobilize to address this travesty from the USFWS. I know my MT representative personally and I still got the same form letter appreciating my concern about wildlife trafficking. And he is a big game hunter no less!

Another approach is to directly contact the Director of the USFWS, Dan Ashe, as it is possible that he is simply following the advice of some CITES person or anti on staff. Ashe is a waterfowl hunter and was a strong supporter of the Sportsmen's Act (which failed because of the revenue increases from raising the price of a duck stamp). Perhaps we could ask him what would happen to waterfowl in the U.S. and North America if all hunters stopped buying duck stamps?

Here is the form page to send a message directly to the USFWS:

http://www.fws.gov/duspit/contactus.htm

They also have a phone number 1-800-344-WILD

To good not to share.

A good friend of mine sent the SCI letters to his Congressional delegation. In response, from one of his senators, he got this rambling response about animal rights, animal right's legislation, food safety, drug use in the horse racing industry, etc. The letter undoubtedly is a form letter. Apparently if anyone writes about any animal issue, they pull out the "animal" inquiry response form, regardless of relevance, and send it out. Our elected representatives are by and large worthless . . . but I digress.

Here is my friend's reply. He is a plainspoken, man of few words. A retired plant worker that now ranches. I think it is priceless.

Dear Senator _________:

There seems to be some mix up of concerns you responded to.

Although me, like almost everyone, is for the humane treatment of animals. Rare dogs are not what I wrote to you about.

Nor was the subject about eating horses. I personally would rather eat good beef, but if someone wants to slaughter his own horses that is his own business, and if someone wants to eat one that should be their business too. It is probably safer and more healthy than fish or chicken.

As to chimps being used for experiments to stop any human suffering. So be it.

What I DID have concerns about was Sally Jewell and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stopping the import of legally sport hunted elephants from Zimbabwe. This was no doubt done to make a few environmental extremists at Washington dinner parties happy.

By doing this and trying to stop any hunting in someone else's country she is putting the elephant at greater danger than ever before. Not having a sport elephant hunting industry that takes very few elephants a year opens the whole country up to the Chinese and the poachers they hire to work for them. The sport hunted elephants are a drop in the bucket as compared to the ones illegally poached by the Chinese. The people that run the elephant hunts and the American money from these hunts are the only chance the elephant has to keep the Chinese and their poachers from exterminating them over the next decade.

Unless one has spent time in the countryside and the more remote villages in Zimbabwe it is hard to understand the poverty and the way the Mugabe government runs things. Elephant hunting around these villages supplies the only food and money these people know or see.

Sally Jewell and the people at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service don't have a clue what is going on in Zimbabwe. Nor do they have a clue what they have just done to wipe the elephants out in Zimbabwe.

/Signed/

Mike

Someone here posted that they had gone to Zim and harvested an elephant before the ban was announced. Their complaint was that they had a prperty right in their tusks once taken and that the USFWS's action was a taking. Now that's interesting and they might have standing. Just a thought.
