Saturday April 10, 2010 Local News Woman eaten by crocodiles as she attempts to cross river From MARC NKWAME in Arusha, 10th April 2010 @ 12:00, A WOMAN identified as Ms Agness Omary (52) has been eaten by crocodiles at the Ruvu Remiti River in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region. Conflicting reports from eye witnesses claim that the old lady was taking a bath in the river when the crocodiles attacked her while other reports had it that Ms Omary was trying to cross the river. Confirming the incident, the Manyara Regional Police Commander, Mr Permena Sumari, said here that on several occasions a number of local people and, or, their cattle have been falling prey to the giant reptiles on the infested Ruvu-Remiti River. It is still not clear why the woman, Ms Omary who should have been all aware of the crocs presence in the water, had decided to plunge into the waters to take the alleged bath. Passers-by testified to have seen the reptiles tear the screaming lady into pieces. According to RPC Sumari, game scouts were summoned to rescue her but they were no match to the hungry, marauding reptiles. Meanwhile, in Simanjiro, the police are holding in custody a farmer known as Mr Wilberry Mboya, aged 50, who is allegedly to have caused the death of a ten-year-old boy, Benjamin Kiondo. It alleged the farmer pushed the boy into the river while chasing him. Police reports indicate that little Benjamin and his friend Humphrey Bumija both aged 10 and residents of Naisinyai Village had previously walked across Mr Mboya's farm when the latter came upon them, accusing the boys of trespassing and threatened to beat up the children. Benjamin and Humphrey on seeing the angry farmer being furious took to their heels but the angry Bumija followed them. It is suspected that the boy fell into a river. Humphrey escaped miraculously while looking helplessly at his mate, Benjamin being swept away by the waters. Angry villagers later apprehended Mr Mboya and had it not been for the police intervention, mob-justice would have taken place. "old woman" age 52. In the third world, that is old. Crocs will keep the population down if everyone must go to the river to bathe, wash clothes, or get drinking water. On my one trip to Africa (sadly)some 17 years ago, my outfitter was a native born Rhodesian. I happen to mention that after nearly a month in the bush (right after end of rainy season)that I had developed a real hatred for crocs. He told me that if he could do so, that he could sit on a river bank and shoot crocs ubtil the barrel melted -and he was also a licensed PH and highly respected by the Ministry as a "lion man" (the guy to go to about problem lions) Crocs really inspire hatred and my heart go out to that poor woman's family. (I'll bet they won't be such enthusiastic supporters of Hollywood types eager to "preserve" crocs against efforts to make them into ladies hand bags and shoes (very nice looking, incidently, so go get 'em!) | |||
