ScriptusSteve, I cannot ascertain the correct date, But I do know that lion were released into Addo in 2003 from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Lion have been so successful at Addo that some have been captured and released into at least one other park in 2008. All the lion in Addo are wild lion.

bwanamrmAwesome photography! I love the male lion and kudu shot... and I agree, damn lucky kudu or damn inexperienced lions.

shakariGreat pics

smarterthanuThat is really cool. What is neet to me is that the kudu never looks panicked. Has that face like a good running back who sees his hole and is going for it.

African Hunters QuestThese pics must be staged...

Sorry, just had to.
Seriously though they are the kind of pis most of us with a camera in hand could only ever dream of in 10 lifetimes.
Absolutely fantastic !!!

Must be pen raised lions if they are in South Africa, hence they are acting like a white NBA player guarding LeBron James.

LionHunterI was last in Addo in 2003 and there were no Lion present at that time. What effect have they had on the Elephant population? The Lions would be healthy as Addo is (was) a plains game rich park.

I was there in 2007 and there where Lions there but we didn't see any. It was a warthog and kudu factory though and we did get some footage of two redhartebeest bulls fighting.
I bet lions have plenty to eat there.

vapodogI took this photo in Addo in 2003:
I saw no lions then but that don't mean there wasn't any!

reddy375While going through the pics I was sure that Kudu was done for! Very surprised at the final outcome....

FishN4EyesNo matter what the context of the photos are, they are still pretty amazing!
Can't believe the big male didn't bring the kudu down, looked like he had a pretty good hold.
Awesome, thanks for posting!

Bwanamichlions are considered "average" hunters amongst large cats with success rates around 20% - 30%. The way the "hunt" is depicted, it is obvious they were caught unprepared and only gave a half hearted attempt. They also all look well fed so probably not desparate to succeed in catching the kudu......
amazing footage! Thx Gords

LandrumIf you notice, the Kudu's right horn is under the lion's chin. I bet that tickled when the point went sliding by his throat. That's probably why the male lion said "F this!"

I would think that the male received a good wallop alongside the jaw, even to the extent that a few molars were loosened.

L. David KeithScriptus, Roy posted this on fb and has been trying to discover Gords ID for some time. My hunters went to Addo last August while I continued hunting and they enjoyed it a lot.

They have black noses and are descended from wild Kgalagadi Desert lion. They are in too good a shape to be inexperienced.

As an indication of their experience, start from the first photo. The leading lioness, quite possibly an older sister, has enough knowledge to go past the kudu and then drive it towards the rest of the pride. The pride immediately goes into ambush mode. That the ambush failed, pure luck for the kudu and as has already been pointed out, lion do not have a very high percentage success rate.

Hi chaps,
I was in Addo this weekend and captured a truly awesome and remarkable sight that I caught on film.

So one lot claiming Kruger and another Shamwari. BS on the wind somewhere??

Tom In TennesseeWhy the suspicions and questions? Have you never had a Kudu leave you with nothing but dust and brush???
03 June 2011, 02:50
MileHighShooterSmall kudu, and went home empty handed. See, road hunting is bad for EVERYONE
