Very sorry to hear that. Spoke to him a few times over the years and I always enjoyed his column in Sports Afield. Rest in Peace Tom.

Thanks for posting that. I found confirmation on the Field & Stream website - a remembrance by David Petzal.

There's also an obituary in the Sheridan Press.

I enjoyed his writing and had the chance to talk with him at DSC after Augusts in Africa came out. His new book Thunder Without Rain is supposed to come out in the spring. RIP.

He was one of the very best outdoor writers alive today! I always went, first and foremost, to the very back of the newest Sports Afield and read his "Back Country" column. He had a gift for writing, an uncanny knowledge of a myriad of subjects and wrote with true depth! His obituary says it all. We are all lessened by his death. Sad news! Frowner

He was great.

He was the last I know of who wrote about elephant hunting in CAR.

RIP

Very sad news indeed.

A few years ago, I arranged a hunt for him to Burkina which he thoroughly enjoyed with some friends that he brought along. He also took a nice buffalo and loved his time there and wrote a nice article when he returned. Afterwards we kept in regular touch and after the problems started in Burkina, Tom went out of his way to try and create awareness of the plight of Wild Life in that now nearly war torn country.

Most recently we exchanged some emails. He wanted to go and hunt Sika in Ukraine now! A true hunter to the end.....

Am sure he is out there hunting in the Happy Hunting grounds.

Another good one gone!

RIP Tom.

Only 70 years old. Far too young. I will miss his intelligent and entertaining writing. May he rest in peace.

I remember one great quote especially. He hunted in CAR when the elephants were just about gone from poaching and passed up a 50 pounder, he wrote "My son will never get the chance I passed up today"
