Anyone have current data on max ammo weight limit in checked baggage? Any variance by carrier, waypoint, or destination? Shipping in advance possible to some locations? | ||

Macifej, I think you must take it in your checked baggage. Your PH may be able to get, or already have, some of your caliber, but you best take what you have been shooting. I also take a small digital scale in my ammo container to prove the weight of each cartridge, if necessary (hasn't been, yet), but so far the airlines take my word on weight of ammo. 11 pounds would get you a little more than 100 rounds of 375 300 grain (41 grams/cart), or a few less than a 100 rounds of 458 win. 500 grain cartridges (51 gm/cart.). Sounds like 10 rounds of 2-Bore in my case and 80 rounds of 378 WBY in the wifes. Wondering if factory 378 WBY could be supplied in country? | |||

Pack the 2 bore cartridges in individual cigar cases...they will never know the difference. If they ask why the cigar cases are heavy, tell them they are freshly rolled and extra moist! I would take more 2-bore and a little less 378 W. | |||

That's a good way to end up in a most unpleasant jail. If you want my opinion, the two of you would be better served taking a 30-06 and the .378. 60 cartridges for the latter should be plenty. That 2-bore doesn't seem to be a very effective chhoice with its heavy rifles to carry all day and its low velocity. Indy Life is short. Hunt hard. | |||

I flew to Zim in sept on Delta via Houston GB/Atlanta/Joberg/Harare. No asked about ammo amounts or weight and I didn't volunteer any info. The ammo flew in the rifle case until Joberg when SAA made us put the ammo in our checked baggage. NRA Life Member DSC Life Member Government exists to protect us from each other. Mac, You've got a 22 pound allowance between you and your wife. Weigh the ammo with packaging and put half of each caliber in your bag and the other half in your wife's. Make sure you have some appropriate packaging for the 2 bore stuff. Do not screw around trying to outsmart the airline people or anyone else. Declare everything. As prevoisly suggested jail in Africa is not where you want to spend your safari. Also regardless of what others have said you do on occasion get your ammo weighed and inspected. And... Now SAA says on their website [seeFAQ's]: Ammo must be IN the Rifle case or in a separate [Hard?] case entirely! NOT in the checked baggage. Les Ammunition A maximum of 5kg securely boxed ammunition per passenger will be permitted for carriage in the hold of the aircraft. Security boxed ammunition must either be placed in the same case/rifle bag or handed in as a separate item for carriage. Any ammunition packed within normal checked baggage will be confiscated by security screening staff at South African Airports, without an option of the airline recovering these items. Note: Due to additional legislation in Germany all ammunition carried to and from Frankfurt and Munich must be packed in a separate securely boxed container and must be handed in as a separate item with the firearm and may not be packed inside the firearm case. | |||

This must be pretty new, SAA has all ways wanted the ammo in your checked luggage seperate from your rifle. That's the way they wanted it this past August and every other time I flew with them. | |||

Any possibility of shipping the ammo to Camp/PH whatever a couple months before arrival? What about sending components and taking a half day to assemble on location? | |||

So if SAA wants the ammo in a separate bag to be handled as a "separate item", plus a gun case and 1 checked bag= 3 bags. Are they going to allow this, or do we hunt naked? | |||

SAA now requires that you put all of your ammo in the rifle case with the rifles and not in checked baggage. It's a pain in the butt as you have to transfer it to your rifle case when you arrive in Joburg. Moreover, they held my bag upon my return trip because my checked baggage contained my ammo. I had to argue with them and they finally released my bag and placed it on the airplane 1/2 hour before I left. I told them that the U.S. wanted it in the checked baggage and not the rifle case. | |||
