Natural Pest Repellants - Sulfur Tablets

Austin HunterNatural Pest Repellants - Sulfur Tablets
Has anyone had luck with oral Sulfur Tablets?
A friend of mine used to survey land in the Louisiana swamps and he and the rest of the crew used to take oral sulfur tablets everyday. He said the girls didn't like kissing them, but it kept all the ticks, chiggers, flies, and mosquitos from biting or staying on them.
Has anyone else ever tried this, especially in Africa?

L. David KeithWhen I fished Bass tournaments, I would take B-1 during the summer to avoid mosquitos at night. It worked. Prior to leaving for Africa, I start my regimen two weeks before departure. I continue until I return home. Last year we experienced ZERO tick bites while our PH's were bitten daily. My advice: take two B-1 tablets in the morning, two at night 2 weeks before you go. Continue while there. ASK YOUR DOCTOR! It's good common sense to ask your Dr before you start taking anything new. Also, if you will spray your hunting clothes with Coulston's Duranon Permanone (I've found no substitute) it will kill any pest that crawls on you. I put two cans in my boots packed in my check in luggage. My hunting clothes are already sprayed and packed inside large zip lock bags. Read the directions: you never use it on your body. Good hunting, LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. Wendell ReichWhen I was a kid, I used to take sulphur tablets occasionally to keep the chiggers off.
We also had a sock filled with sulphur that we kept by the back door. You would beat the sock on your legs before going out into the field. It worked well to keep teh chiggers off you.
Never tried it in Africa.
That B1 idea is something I have never heard of. Interesting.
Sulpher tabs, sorry no, but...like L. David, I swear by "repellants" with permethrin like Permanone. I'm not familiar with Coullard's but Fite-Bite, 3-M, and Sawyer's all make it.
The stuff even withstands washing a time or two. Treat before you leave and then again after every two washings and you'll be way ahead of the game. In 10 years of using the stuff I've had no ticks in the turkey woods nor any of any kind in Africa. Works well on skeeters and the like, too. It aint no repellant, it kills the suckers.
AGAIN, read the directions, you do not spray your skin or your clothes while you are wearing them.

L. David KeithPowdered sulpher works, just as Wendell suggested, and tablets work too. They are stronger than B-1 so we humans can smell the sulpher. LDK

quackgrHow many mg are the B1 tablets you take? We also heard that there are some transdermal patches available. Has anyone used them? Thanks

L. David Keithquackgr: I take 250mg: 4 per day starting two weeks before I ago (taking them now) and continue during my stay. 2 morning, 2 at night. You want it in your system ahead of time. Check with your Doctor to make sure you are on no meds that the B-1 could interfere with. Good hunting, LDK

SGraves155After reading the above, I mixed up a concoction that's working on me and the dogs. Old sock, 1/4 th full of powdered sulfur, 1/4 th full of Sevin dust, tied off. Dust your socks, jeans, shoes, boots, and shirt with it. Dust the dogs with it like a big powder puff. Dogs don't seem to mind, and 90% of their ticks have died.
Also started taking the B1 twice a day, and taking MSM (meth-sulfonyl-methane) which is supposed to be 30+% sulfur. Now when I go out, I get 0-1 ticks, instead of 8-10 ticks. Thanks.
Gonna add guinea fowl again soon, too, after borrowing a shock collar to teach the dogs to leave 'em alone.

Black FlyWhen I fished in the bush in Canada, I came on a crew of wood cutters, they had smeared themselves with diesel to keep off the black flies. There are a lot of home remedies out there, and most don't work, or work only for some people. Deet or Deet/ permethrin work. If you use them according to the label, you can hunt and not worry about the bugs. Would you use some bullets your neighbor made to shoot whitetails to hunt buffalo? With all you have riding on a trip and the risk of tick fevers, use enough gun, Deet.

be careful with 7&1/2% sevin- damn toxic stuff. put some on a stray dog once that was hanging around our peanut warehouse to kill his fleas and 30 min. later he started seizing and died. it can be absorbed through the skin.

L. David Keithjdollar is correct: you will absorb it through your skin Steve. The dog will lick himself daily: he will absorb it through consumption. Stick with your sulpher and B-1. As for Deet, use caution. I used 100% Deet in Ben's 100 until my fingers and hands began to break out in welps. I started reading up on Deet. Not good in high percent dosages. That's why most of it now only contains 6-14% Deet. It's also bad to wear any man made socks (plastic based: nylon, poly etc) as evidently it creates a problem when your body temp rises. Use caution with any pesticide. LDK

Where do you buy the Coulston's?
Thanks

19 May 2007, 23:42
L. David KeithLocally, only the small gun/archery shops carry it. I have tried Repel and it just doesn't work anywhere near what the Coulston's does. I've seen it in Cabela's in Sidney, but here is their direct address:
Coulston Products Inc.
PO Box 30
Easton, PA 18044-0030
No phone # is listed. It is odorless, stainless and claims to be effective for six weeks. You DO NOT apply it to your skin: only clothing. Spray outside in a vented area, allow to dry and wear. I spray my hunting clothes, pack in zip lock storage bags and pack in my check in luggage. I'll wear each outfit 1-3 times (depending upon weather/etc) then run through the laundry. I respray before wearing. This product kills Ticks and Mosquito's. Average price per can is $5.99. Great stuff! LDK
