Saeed, I've hunted this block and by chance did you see the large washed out area of petrified wood by the side of the road from the airstrip to camp? If not, I bet the Vincents or someone else familiar with the block knows about this spot.

Thank you again for letting us tag along and for such a terrific photographic show of the Selous.

Ditto on the elephant..lots of calves!

Normal hunting day.

We found several animals, but none that we wanted to shoot.

Then just out of the blue, we do.

We saw a kudu bull, and ran after him. We then saw that he was too young.

We followed some kongoni, and never managed to get a shot.

Then we saw more kongoni, and, again, we could not see a decent bull to shoot.

But we saw a very young born recently.

We went to find a a place to have lunch, and far away we could see two wildebeest.

We stopped the car, and tried to get to them, getting stopped on the way by several groups of impala and baboons!

Eventually we did get close, and shot one.

We had our late lunch there.

In the afternoon we were driving back to camp, when we saw a large herd of eland.

The wind was not perfect, but we decided to see if we could get a quick shot at a bull.

We got our chance, and shot an old bull.

We cut him in half and loaded him up, drove back to camp gettng there at 9.

Dinner is being prepared - buffalo steak!

A pride of lions came to visit us at camp last night.

We had some bones across the river for both hyenas and crocs, and the lions decided to join in them.

Hyenas kept us up all night with their usual racket!

I also hunted this block as stand-in PH while its previous owner was in the Nairobi Hospital recovering from a Lion mauling - he died a short while later but not from the mauling.

I have not seen other places with such an abundance of petrified wood and on one of the crests downriver from camp there are entire petrified tree trunks.

Other than the main Game Dept. access roads (2 or 3), there were hardly any hunting tracks to speak of and hunting was extremely hard; I see the Vincents have developed the area well. tu2

It would be cool to see pics of that, especially the entire petrified tree trunks. I had a grandfather years ago that had a fireplace made out of petrified wood on his ranch.

I must admit, I collected a couple of small pieces of petrified wood from that site I referenced. They are on my desk at my office- momentos from fun times...

Fulvio is right- its a petrified forest at that one place in LU5- a really cool area.

Saeed,

Who has been making the sausage?
It looks ... well, never mind.
You might consider hanging some of those for leopard bait.

I was in that block last year. I don't remember a petrified forest, but there was one area not far from camp where there were quite a few remnants. There was one piece that must have been about 4m long that had been one single piece, but had broken into several chucks, very cool.

Our camp is not in the original place - Pango.

It has been moved about 6 kilometers down river, just short of Makuti.

The roads have been improved enormously, which makes moving around much easier.

Maktoum shot a buffalo.

I shot a waterbuck and an impale for bait.

Saeed,

Has the drone been attacked by any birds?
Have any tried to mate with it or eat it?
Looks like one of those vultures might have
been getting a bit frisky.

Those drone photos of vultures are brilliant!

Impressive how such a small pool of water can support so much wildlife.

We are still not seeing many tse tse flies! Which is a great blessing.

Hyenas are so noisy at night with their racket, they only stop as the camp wakes up.

At night we see a number of crocs by our camp -some are as large as 8 feet.

hey disappear completely in theday time.

I flew the drone looking for them about two miles eiher side of our camp in the river, but saw on!!

We think they find a deep pool and remain there all day.

Yesterday we had one of those hunting days.

We were driving along early going quite far looking for a hippo to shoot as croc bait.

About 3 Ks from camp, we saw a lone duggaboy.

We went after him, and saw him standing broadside looking back at us.

Alan put the shooting sticks up, and just as I was pulling the trigger, he took off.

Too late to stop the shot.

Alan and me looked at each other, and I said "I am not sure about my shot. He took off as I was pulling the triggger, and Idid not hear a hit"

Roy said he had heard what sounded like a hit.

The buffalo was about 160 yards away.

Off we went to see.

WE found where he was when I fired. No blood.

We thought that is good news, as we really have no wish to chase a marginally wounded buffalo all day.

A few steps further, we found one drop of blood.

That was not good news!

What I feared could have hapened

A few steps further and no more blood.

Then quite a lot, some frothy blood.

That loked like good news, as it shows he was hit in the lungs.

A few steps further, and Robert saw him ying down stone dead!

The bullet took both his lungs out.

Still, the bullet took out both lungs.

Today is one of those hunting days one might remember for quite a long time.

We were about 5 kilometers from camp when we saw two buffalo bulls.

We got close to them, and saw one was an old dugga boy and one a younger bull.

Trouble was they were in a thicket, and one might get a chance as they moved through some gap.

The old duggaboy did, and I shot him.

He ran a few steps and dropped, and started flopping about so I shot him again.

We cut him up, and went and put one as lion bait, on a bait that had been fed on by several lions including a male.

We then headed out looking for whatever we could find.

We found a kudu feeding in the bush.

WE went after him, and I fired a shot at him.

WE could not find him, but lots of blood.

We followed him further into the thicket, very slow going.

We caught up with him and finished him up.

The truck could not get there, which took us 4 hours to find that out.

We cut the kudu up, and carried it to the truck.

Now it is almost 5 in teh afternoon, with us not having eaten anything since breakfast!

We were close to one of our leoprad baits, and went to have a look.

Nothing has touched it.

We got on the way back to camp.

Saw some guinea fowl, and I shot one.

A few hundred yards further, we see an old leopard male lying down in the bush.

We tried to get a shot, but he was lying down and we could only see his head, looking straight at us.

We found a gap towards him, and waited for him to get up.

He did, turning around to go away.

I fired at him, and he flopped down.

Kaboobi Kaboobi time, which everyone enjoyed.

The usual noisy racket from the hyenas at night, keeping everyone up.

Roy starts hunting today, Walter has two more days of rest before he starts hunting.

Apparently Maktoum, Pete and Gary are giving him a hard time - something he well deserves clap

On our team, when it is Roy's days to hunt, he has priority on whatever animal we find that are on his license.

We have not seen a single zebra yet. Some tracks, but not one visible yet.

Plenty of eland and buffalo though.

We are very surprised at how few the tse tse flies are.

No complaints there though Smiler
