Hard to believe those comments were posted on a website dedicated to shooting. DSC needs a better press release policy.

I have a Ph.D. in economics and can make my undergrads get the basic principles of environmental economics in about an hour. The problem is that most of these people opposed to the rhino hunt will not take an hour to think about these issues. This is at least partially because the know they will not like the answers they reach. In stead they are willing to "conserve" a species into extinction rather than even possibly consider an alternative. I always ask my anti-hunting friends, "Do you want more rhino or do you want THIS rhino because you cannot have both."

Tendrams,

That is a very interesting observation. Do you think that you could give us an outline here (in point form) of the basic principles of environmental economics? I am sure that many of us here would be interested.

Guys,

To anyone willing to give it some thought the auctioning off of this rhino with the prceeds going to conservation makes perfect sense and obviously is a good thing. To these anti hunting zealots the "killing" of the animal is so repugnant that it negates any justification for the killing. That is scary to me as I don't see a way to educate these folks if they won't listen and these same people continue to spread their misguided philosophy daily.

It truly is a shame that this publicity gets the antis..Maybe they should read the just published report on CNN about how poachers are using helicopters to kill the rhinos in Sabi Sands in South Africa and see how much they are willing to donate to curb those criminals. Sorry don't have the link to the story, but maybe someone can get it.

They will all yell and scream, but if they truly wanted to save this Rhino, their money is as good as anyone else.

Buy it. You don't have to shoot it. Take it home with you. If you are so upset, pool your money and bid on it!

What ... no bidding at all from the anti-hunting crowd??? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Asian country embassy staff in SthAfrica, are involved in the illegal trade/purchase of Rhino horn for the Asian consumer market.
With the advantage of having diplomatic immunity.

In addition to that, Asian nationals are paying above market hunt prices, to shoot a trophy Rhino and are then instructing camp staff not to
bother with trophy prep......They are then able to get the horn out of Africa, via legal CITES permits.

Vietnamese nationals reportedly conducted 203 white rhino hunts in SA 2005 - 2007,a yielded 406 rhino horns.
SA exports, only account for 268 horns exported to Viet Nam during this same period,
suggesting that one-third of these hunts took place without the subsequent acquisition of CITES documents.

That anti crowd is always long on mouth and short on money. They never contribute to conservation. In fact, many have been quoted as saying they'd rather see animals extinct than to hunt one. Mental midgets, the lot of them. BTW; if I owned that web site, there would be zero posts from anti-hunters on my page. They would be banned immediately. They contact all their like minded minions and advise them to "pour it on." Bad job on the Admin's part. LDK

I moderate DSC's Facebook page and Game Trails Online. I can say that we've gotten tons of hate comments / emails over this rhino hunt. Although my days is filled deleting these things I have to say that the outcry hasn't been as bad as I thought. The antis favorite target are cats. Leopards usually garner several hundred hate emails. Poor rhino just isn't as pretty I guess.
On the bright side, a few people have commented that while they don't agree with hunting they can see the merit in such a hunt.

Gayne,

You might wish to remind those idiots that if they stop feeding on beef and pork from the supermarket, then both cows and pigs will be extinct!

Cannot these brainless nitiwits get it into their heads that it take lots of money to raise and keep these animals?

Where do they think this should come from?

I've pointed out repeatedly that this animal is an old bull that will have to be killed by rangers anyway...
Hunting's evil!
No one wants to keep rhinos anymore, landowners don't want an animal that poachers target on their property
Hunting's evil!
The tag could go for $1 million, all of which will go to rhino conservation
Hunting's evil!
It would take several hundred thousand photo safaris to equal that amount, most of which stays with the photo operator
Hunting's evil!
Thank you. We must agree to disagree
Hunting's evil!
Have a nice day
Hunting's evil!
Good bye
Hunting's evil!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I've spoken to enough people that I can no longer support any form of democracy based on the simple qualification of being at least 18 years old to vote. This thread does nothing to change my mind.

In Africa democracy amounts to one man , one vote , one time - and then hold onto that power by any means possible. I agree with jdollar sentiment but would add tax payer ( as opposed to purely consumer ) to the list of prerequisites . I think we're running this thread off topic somewhat ...

I've said it before many times, can't reason with the anti-hunters. In many ways who we need to concentrate on getting the conservation message to are the non-hunters whose minds haven't been totally poisoned and haven't become anti hunters yet.
