Concerning the 4 pictures of you standing in the water taking pics of the hippo, that water looks deep enough to be hiding a croc........ Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA

That hippo was in deep sleep! I had a word in his ear not long before that photo was taken

For those who think fat is bad for you. The photo above shows the fat in one of the elands we shot, and I bet anyone to keep up with an eland on the trot

Saeed, Did Walter finally get his digoxin, coumadin, lisinopril, and viagra in on the next plane in from Arusha so that he could "enjoy" his safari?

Saeed, if it is so healthy, how come you were cutting him in half. Must have been something wrong with him for him to get to that point! It don't matter if you run fast, in the end it's who gets to mount the cows!

Well, I am from a different family of animals. If I was left to catch him with two feet, I somehow doubt that would have worked. I used a little tool I made myself, it weighs 300 grains, and was propelled from an instrumental I also made myself, travelling at almost 2,000 miles an hour, while an eland apparently can do 25 miles an hour. He did not stand a chance in hell my friend. That is why we all enjoyed him for dinner.

I have been asked to post some details of our hunts, so I will start with elands. Both our eland this year were very easy. The first eland we were driving along looking for buffalo tracks, passing through an open plain. The trackers spotted some eland in the Forrest to our right, so we stopped to see if there was a bull we could shoot. We got off the truck, and went over to have a look. We could see some cows, but no bull was visible to us. The eland were a few hundred yards away, with a slight ridge between us. We got closer, then could see a bull standing right in the open. I fired a shot at him, and he ran off a few yards and stopped. I fired another shot at him, he ran a few more yards and dropped. There really was no reason to shoot him again, but, I normally keep shooting until I see the animal is on the ground. This was in mid morning. We cut him in half, and took him back to camp, and had our lunch there. Rene was very happy to get an eland, so were we. The second eland was not much different. We were driving back to camp, after we had shot a kongoni. We spotted a lone eland cow, which ran into the forest. We jumped out of the truck, and ran after her, hoping she was part of a herd with a good bull. We followed them for less than two miles, and saw the same cow standing in an open space, looking back. WE stopped and kept looking. Alan saw the bull come out of the forest, and put the shooting sticks up. Roy was behind us, and could not see the eland. I could see the head and neck of the bull, so we moved slightly to the right to be able to see his chest. I fired a shot at him, and he ran back a few yards and dropped. Again, we cut him in half, and had quite a job loading him in the truck, and took home back to camp. This is in contrast to some of the eland we had shot in the past, where we had to follow them for miles and miles and never get a chance at a shot. I will post more details.

Sometimes, in hunting, not getting what you are after can work out to be for the best. We went up into some hills that have no road access, looking for some dugga boys we know live there. Lots of thick bush, and deep, narrow corongos in there. We found the fresh tracks of a bull, and followed him. Keeping the track in sight was not very easy, because of the ground. But, we did manage to stay on his tracks. Sometimes we spent quite a time looking at area not much bigger than an acre. Later in the morning, we got close to him, sadly, he spooked and ran off without getting a chance of a shot. He ran off from less than 50 yards, but all we saw was a black streak for a second or two. We decided to give up on him, as it was getting late in the morning, and we headed to where we had sent the truck to wait for us. When we got less than half a k from where our truck was, we saw some waterbuck feeding. The wind was great, and we tried getting close to them to see if there was any mature bull. They were feeding with some wildebeest. We did not see anything worth shooting, so we just continued our walk to the truck. Suddenly, Amiri, one of our trackers, stopped and pointed ahead, mouthing the word "nyati"! Sure enough, we could see an old bull feeding about 150 yards away. Alan put the shooting sticks up, and I got on them ready to shoot. He said "wait! there are others there" Sure enough, there were 4 old bulls - just like the ones we were looking for all morning! "Let us get closer, we might be able to get two" We got a bit closer, and I fired a shot at the first one we saw. We ran after the others, and fired a shot at another one as he stopped to look back at his fallen friend. He ran a few yards and dropped. Our first buffalo was still on his feet, so I put another bullet into him. If we had shot the one we had found down in the valley, we would not have come here. We cut one up, and Alan left to put it up as lion bait. Roy and me stayed behind with the other members of the crew to cut up the second bull.

Saeed: Thank you kindly, rec'd the patch and two sticks several days ago. Sent you a PM that night. this is the first I've been back on here. Thanks again for your generosity. George \ Just a note to question the velocity of your magic bullets. Take a look at what you posted in the last. Re: "---300gr @ almost 2000 miles per hour??" Uhh, that's nearly 100,000FPS, I doubt even your cannon's can produce that. IF they can, I sure as hell don't want to fire one, ha! Yeah, I have fumble fingers too, all the time. Cheers! Sorry George, Saeed is correct. 3000 fps = 2045 mph. MPH = FPS X .681818 Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA

JBF: Can't be: 5280 ft per mile. Figure it up. 2000 x's that is well over 100,000fps. Nothings been invented yet to fire a bullet that fast. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. Dwight

Putting it another way: 3000fps X (60sec/min X 60min/hr)/5280 fpm = 2045 3000fps X 3600= 10800000/5280 =2045 Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA

We had two very funny incidents. One morning we were not long out of camp, when we someone in the back saw a hyena in the bush, apparently running in our directions. We stopped the truck, and I loaded my rifle, turned the scope up 8X, expecting the hyena to cross the road, which stretched straight behind us for a at least 200 yards. Suddenly, Alan said "he is here! He is here!" Pointing to the brush a few yards from us. I turned towards where he was pointing, and all I could see was the head of the hyena! I knew there was no time to turn the scope power down to 2.5X, as the hyena was crossing the road. I just swung the cross hair ahead of his nose, and pulled the trigger. There were screaming of joy from the back of the truck, as he was hit smack in the head, and did a somersault! On another occasion, we were trying to shoot a hippo bull for croc bait. We got into the forest, and were walking down a hippo path, which led to the river. We were standing just at the edge of the forest, looking down a hippo path. The opening was no more than a few feet. Suddenly, a bulls head appeared from our left, walking down the river about 8 steps from us. The opening was not big enough to show the whole of the hippo. Again, I had the scope set on high, as we saw some crocs across the water, and were hoping we might see one big enough to shoot. Looking at his head, I could see the eyes and ears, nothing else. And to be able to get a good look at the angle of his head, I really wanted to see the whole of his head. I quickly turned the scope down, and shot him. He dropped in his tracks. Roy was behind me on the camera, and said he was wondering why I was playing with my scope at a time when I had to make a very quick shot!

Alan's concession is fantastic. It has elements of both Chete and Matetsi in Zimbabwe. This area used to belong to Yushka Majar. He used to ask me every year to hunt with him when he came to DUBAI, but sadly that never happened. He had some luck with cats, as he was mauled by a leopard twice, and a lioness once. The lioness caused his death. Andrew, you enjoyed the drone footage, what about everything else on that video?

I took about a week to watch it all, but have gone back and watched some of the older videos as well, and am simply amazed at such an unselfish gift! Saeed, I have enjoyed all the hunts from the first one you sent out. I have loaned them all to friends who have never been to Africa, and they simply can't believe the quality of such an unselfish gift. ...................................................................Thank you again Saeed! ......................................................................... You are very very welcome my friend. It gives me so much pleasure to know that you and your friends, as well as all the friends I share these videos with are enjoying them. I have some friend who stopped watching any commercial hunting videos, and just keep watching ours. Since we started sending them out on USB, we have sent at least 2,000 copies a year. A very small price when you consider how much everyone enjoys them.

They are wonderful and I have not asked for the newest. I assumed you send out many, but did not want to further burned you. I also get jealous; as I wish I could be there. However, do you mind if I share with those who are not on AR? I try to get them here, but their computer use is limited to work. I am sure they will join if I can convince them of the greatness. Since we started sending them out on USB, things have gotten easier, and I will be more than happy to send you one. And any other member of AR who has not gotten one, and would like to have, please send me your complete address in a PM. I still get requests by email, which I ignore. Hello Saeed: I hope you and your family, are doing well. Walter sent me a few months ago, the videos of the hunts of 2015 and 2016. As always, spectacular. I do not know how you do it so that each year will turn out better. The works with the drones are also very good. Thank you for sharing them.

I love the drone footage. I'm just starting to use a DJI Phantom Four, but my videos are not as clear or smooth as yours. What "quality" of video are you recording or what settings are you using to get such clear and smooth video? Will J. Parks, III
|
Administrator |
I always set any camera I am using on the highest quality and frame rate it is capable of. In this case 4K at 30 fps. The new Phantom 4 Pro can go to 60 fps . Your video might be jittery if you use a memory card that is not fast enough.
|

Thanks, boss. I was using the 16gb card that came with the Phantom. I'll switch to my high speed 32gb next time out. Will J. Parks, III

You really need a 1000X card for trouble free 4K recording. By the way, the X part comes from the old floppy disks. They had a transfer speed of 0.15 MB per second. Then when DVDs came, you might remember they had a speed rating of so many X. So a 1000X memory card will have a transfer speed of 150 MBs. You can use cards rated at 95 MBs. As sometimes that is how they rate them. The capacity of the card is immaterial as long as you empty it after each flight.

Hopefully later next month. Just talked to Alan about it. It has been a very hectic summer with lots of travel, and just got back home and slowly trying to catch up and getting organized. In fact, I got the Malarone for us all this morning, and next week is going to be loading ammo time.
