I have heard that the govt in Zambia is considering making the .40 caliber the new minimum in Zambia for dangerous game. Has anyone else heard this or know about this?

Gee, so that would mean the 45-70 is legal but the .375 is not? That makes no sense.

ticky-tack!

The funny thing about Africa, they have no minimum proficiency test for DG clients coming to hunt anywhere. Even something simple like being able to load your rifle without any assistance and put four shots (off the sticks) in an eight inch bull at fifty yards in under thirty seconds.
MY 45-70 loads for my 1886 Winnie would work for most though. 520gr bullets over 1800fps. From what some post here that beats the actual velocity of the 458 WM.

You must be able to load the '86 a lot hotter than a Guide Gun. I don't go much hotter than a 405gr hard cast at 1,800 fps in my GG. What kind of load are you using?

SHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't conjure up evil spirits from the past!!!

I have a plan...

Everyone with a 375 HH click on my link in my sig line and check out the 404-375

Rebore a 375 to a 404-375!

I guess all those thousands of dead animals killed by a good shot from a 375 were not enough for the Zim corrupticians

The only real reason I see to use a 375 in a DG situation is if you cannot shoot well under the influence of recoil.

Good thing is if you shoot a 400 grain 40 ish cal bullet @ 2150 you can get almost the same amount of low recoil energy.

Good thing is that more 404 bullets are designed to work at those lower velocities.

Step on up and rebore that 375 barrel!

400 grain pills up to 2,400 fps but I would keep it to 2,300.

458 Lott, 404-375, 375 HH

Just a simple neck up.

Same taper as the 375 HH

Darn Boom Stick,
I've been following your 404-375 thread for years now waiting for one of you guys to get a gun built. Now I may have to do it myself...or not hunt in Zambia. Smiler

Maybe in 1963, but not in this century. I call your attention to michael458's 39 page post in Big Bores if you want to learn something useful.

What if you shoot well enough that you enjoy using the bare minimum making a one shot kill? That's when I feel the sporting side of things anyway. And no, recoil has never been a problem for me so far.

If that happens in Zambia, get your money gathered up so you can buy all the BRNO 375 H&H rifles that will be for sale in Zambia! That is the most popular rifle/caliber for PHs in Zambia, unless they own a double rifle!

I think this is something that is just blowing in the wind. I don't think anything will ever replace the old 1912 "H&H THREE, SIX BITS" in any african country! coffee

Guys,

I called Laura Du Plooy this AM. She said there has been a recommendation that PH's carry 40 cal or larger but it does not effect tourist hunters.

Or you could just build a .404 Jeff....

With the Hornady ammo available it is truly a viable option again!

No knowledge of the rumor. Laura DuPlooy would seem to be an unimpeachable source, though.

Reverting to the realm of opinion, I will say that it's better to hit where it counts with a .375 than to miss with a .416. Wink

Best, IMHO, would be to prescribe .375 as a minimum, and recommend as much as one can handle and shoot straight as a maximum.

EAPHA did establish the .400 minimum, though, as I recall. Not to suggest that they were omniscient, but they were experienced, one must give them that.

Still, the .375 will do the job, if the shooter does his.

Personally, I prefer the .500 A-Square for elephant, hippo and buffalo, and a .375 or .416 for the cats.

Not all dangerous game are created equal. Cool
