Big heavy mature horns have a large "heart" shape, nice bases grown together, and long tips. This is a 24.5", 12.5" base bull from Namibia. Had to use the largest form available, as the body was huge.

Blank, that is a very nice red heartabeast! That is one animal I do not have, and one I want in the worst way. I'd also like a PUKU, a good Gemsbok, a Kafuwe Leechway, and a good sittatunga! The Puku, and the Sittunga were both in places where I've hunted, but i just didn't find a good one of either, the Heartabeast, and the gemsbok were not in the places where I've hunted, but I'm thinking of changeing that soon.

Congratulations on your heartabeast! I'm envious! beer

Here is one I shot in Namibia in August with Roger Coomber who is a member here. It was just under 25". Sorry for the nasty photos, I couldn't clean him up and was losing light. He was long on top and had pretty good mass. My buddy Lee Britt shot one the day before that was over 25" and ranked like #11 with a bow...

I was clueless to be honest. I just tried to pick the best bull with the heaviest horns..worked out pretty good!

How do you judge a good Hartebeest ? By the smile on the hunters face.

No measurements on this one, but it was the young blokes first kill useing Andrew McLarens .308.

Edit: First Kill with a .308.

My PH thought this guy was around 22 inches when we saw him at 260 yards. When we put the tape on it, it was around 20-21. Not to big but not too small. Plus it was old and limping behind its little herd. I’m happy with it.

That smile sure says everything Code4! Here's another smile that says a lot...

This was Dennis from Washington State's first African animal as well. This bull which was hunted in May this year measured just shy of 23".

All of these photos are excellent examples. I passed on a shot at a good Red Hartebeest in RSA this past March and I still regret it to this day. After viewing these photos, I know now that I will have to go back and hunt one again. thx

Will, I really like that one as a european. Was that skull boiled or beedled? I never get skulls back from the african taxidermists that are that white. Very nice.

Hey Ryan
The outfit I hunted with did the dip and pack on the property. They would soak the skulls in clean water and strip them by hand. Then they tightly wrapped the horns in rubber inner-tube and finished the skulls in a tank of hydrogen-peroxide. No yellow skull’s, no burned or discolored horn bases. I have been washing them and spraying them with some bug spray my taxidermist told me to use every few weeks. I was very impressed.

This one is from Nomtsas Farm, about three hours south of Windhoek. It measured right at 25 inches and has bases that are essentially grown together.

Here is the European skull mount, along with several other trophies from that hunt, just like they were received from Nomtsas -- as white as snow.
