I'm fairly new to AR, and have become quite addicted. Never been to Africa, but love reading you posts, etc. Have scrolled back couple of years and stumbled upon shootaway. Find myself reading many of his posts - hard to explain. Entertainment? Wondering why he left?

He's still around as far as I know. He shows up more in the Big Bore forum than most often as far as I can tell.

No, I think he might have had the earlier operation reversed.

Actually, if Shootaway was a troll, he was quite clever at it. I think he probably is/was a nice guy, just very different. Didn't he actually go to Africa and report on it, with pictures and all?

Shootaway's best quality may be his ability to roll with the constant punches dished out by the hardcore AR and never get discouraged. His loopiest posts were/are fun to read.

Yup, he went last year -- though judging by the photos in his hunt report, he left the snowmobile helmet at home. Big Grin

His posts after he went to Africa were a good bit less "loopy" than those before he went.

Dealing with him was always entertaining. He was remarkably obtuse, but he was enthusiastic.

I gained some repsect for him when he finally did his successful buff hunt, even though he did burn out a barrel on his Lott working up loads and shooting in near darkness and sub-freezing temperatures. I miss having him around.

A leopard and buff hunt would be great.I would prefer an open-sighted, bolt action Lott for all my hunts.

I do have to hand it to you, you rarely let anyone get under your skin, no matter how hard they try.

Part of the reason that you have fell afoul with some members is that you can seem a bit dogmatic. When you couple this with the fact that you contradict yourself at times, many of us have thought that you were a troll. I have a list of your posts that made me shake my head. I wonder what you might think as you read through them....

No CHEAP stuff here.It should be ready in a few months.I hope I get it before my RENDEZVOUS with AFRICA,the Masai and the great CAPE BUFFALO.

All copper bullets are really hard on the rifling. The best bullet is a SwiftAFrame of the RIGHT WEIGHT.I think Nosler was right when he said "you need the right lead core to perform on big game" Lead jacketed bullets, constructed the right way, expand much quicker and greater than monometals.

I was told by a famous guild gunsmith/gunmaker that FUNCTIONALLY there is NO difference between a CZ 550 action and ANY other more expensive action. So,my second custom project will be with a the CZ action I sent him.He has built rifles with GMA and more expensive actions.

I don't believe in powder measurers or throwers.I always use a plastic spoon and a aluminum funnel to measure my charges.I know all my loads are as accurate as hell and it cost me less.

Posted 08 March 2008 04:12
I just got back from the range after shooting the Lott.I put a sand bag between the stock and my shoulder because I loaded around max on some loads and didn't know what to expect. It was a cloudy day just a few hours before another expected snow storm. The target at 100yds was barely visible and I wondered if I would hit it or not. This may sound strange but I was shooting with instictlike Star Wars.I will post the load and velocity of various single rds I fired.I was not shooting groups but used this session to determine velocities and make more sensible loads. After firing the rds and depriming,I checked the primer pocket of every round.I found the Reloader 7 loads to have stretched the primer pockets so much that I could insert a magnum primer with my finger without effort.I suspect Reloader 7 was the load also responsible for the loose primer pockets of my 458WM.I will no longer use Reloader 7 for ANY further shooting. All other loads had no noticeable change to their primer pockets. Here is todays

The Ruger bolt action 458 Lott has nearly 6000ftlbs of energy with the recoil of a 300wm.Plus,you get to shoot a 500gr bullet.

I use the naturally occuring scope called the brain combined with open sights for hunting.

Inherent accuracy=308Win,300WinMag,7mmRmag,300RUM. Inherently inaccurate=270Win,3006,270WSM and other garbage.

In North America, only people who hunt with the 300WM or 300RUM know about hunting and anything else.

Pressures in the big bore cartridges, although they may be the same as medium caliber cartridges, last longer since the speed of the bullet is less. This is the reason,I think for the enlarged primer pockets.

Posted 18 March 2008 01:08 Hide Post
I agree that I am over pressure.I said so in one of the posts above.I have in NO WAY denied that.I reached this conclusion from my load tests performed above. What in the world makes you think I ignored that? Are you drunk?

Here is a picture of how the Woodleigh solids keyholed on the target today. The first two pics show the 500gr FMJ and the third shows the 550gr FMJ. It seems that after firing around 150 rds mostly TSX and FMJ the rifling has eroded to the point that it can no longer get a grip and spin these bullets.

The creep or travel on the CZ trigger has gotten really bad after a couple of hundred rounds. This is a trigger that can't stand up to recoil.

Posted 21 April 2008 19:22 Hide Post
Metalsmith, aside from the feeding problem and there fragile trigger there is nothing wrong with a CZ 550 rifle.

Posted 21 April 2008 21:05 Hide Post
Pegleg, the barrel never got hot.The way I see it is that for a magnum catridge rifle to shoot accurately the bore has to be like new. From my experience with the Lott,I feel that copper bullets and hard jacketed solids are extremely hard on the lands. The Lott is capable of shooting solids accurately only when its bore is like new.

Are the powders listed in reloading manuals by a manufacturer, for a specific bullet tested, the only powders tested for that bullet,or are they the best performing powders of various others tested?

I have seen different powders tested for the 270WSM in some manuals that were not included in others.

To give an example,Reloader 25 is used in the Swift manual for the 270WSM 140gr bullet but it is not used in the Barnes data for their 140TSX.Has Barnes tried R25?

It had a slightly loose front guard screw but it's still shooting good. I believe that the loose front screw caused the point of impact to shift upward several inches.I corrected the problem before I discovered the loose screw by using another leaf on my sights.Today I loaded W748 and 500gr Woodleigh FMJ bullets and shot from a rest. The first three shots are on the top left of the target.I then swithed to the 100yd leaf to lower the point of impact.I then fired one shot. This is the hole below and a bit to the left of the 3 shot group.I then unscrewed the sights and shifted them to the right and fired a 2 shot group. It would be a tighter 2 shot group if I had stopped to clean the bore.I was glad to see the rifle is still capable of a good group, especially with the 500gr Woodleigh FMJ bullets.I think it is very important to check point of impact on big bores from time to time.

A few of these statements seem to contradict each other, others sound like they might have come from a teenager. I think I missed the one about bigbores shooting-out their barrels quickly. It kinda reminded me of a bunch of 15 year-olds discussing cars.

Regardless, I enjoy your posts. When I read that you had left the forum I admit my first thought was, "things are going to seem boring without him."
