Good cam-vids of a waterhole, but I thought the African buffalo is the Cape Buffalo and the Asian/Australian buffalo is the Water Buffalo. But what do I know, I live in Montana where the trendy thing now is to call our American Buffalo by their Latin name.

buffybr,I enjoy the water hole website, and have seen some real things near that water hole! You are correct, however, the water Buffalo is an Asian buffalo, like those found in Australia and the Buffalo of Africa, are the CAPE BUFFALO,, and the DWARF BUFFALO, of west Africa, are all Buffalo.

The American Buffalo is not a buffalo at all, but a BISON. The Bison, Gauer, Musk OX, and the YAK, are all OXEN.

Many people who do not know better call African Buffalo WATER BUFFALO, and I suspect the guy designing the web-site for the water hole, doesn't know a CAPE BUFFALO, or a WATER BUFFALO from a Oklahoma milk cow!

My understanding of the term "oxen" (plural of "ox") is that it refers to a neutered male adult bovine, typically used for draft purposes. Herefords, Charlois, or even Longhorns could be "oxen". I don't think it is a term of species or genus classification. Of course, I have been wrong before, at least according to my wife.

Also, the Musk Ox is not a member of the bovine (cattle) family, but rather is more closely related to goats.
