I made a post about it when I returned last August. It was posted on August 14, 2008 here on the African Hunting Forum. It explains it with a little detail. Suffice it to say, I shot a super cat that had killed and partially eaten a female. We shot him over his own kill approximately 14-16 hours later. Here's another picture of the two of them together with Ben, our head tracker:

UEG,
Wonderful story. Your photo above is even better than the ones in the article. I wonder if anyone else has ever found a partially devoured leopard killed by a big tom--and doubt anybody else has killed the tom over the carcase. Congrats on the leopard and the article!

Congrats on your story being published!!

John Hunt got me my leopard too and my story was published in the Sept/Oct 2007 issue of SCI's Safari Magazine.

John told me your story and showed me pictures of your leopard...it is absolutly beautiful!! He also told me what a pleasure it was hunting with you. Good for you, you deserve it.

John is out right now hunting with a client, and his last client took a nice male as well.

I'm sure you will agree when I say that John is such an awesome guy and a great leopard specialist. I think he's taken over 100 now.

If anyone is interested in hunting with John please PM me.

Frank

Thanks Steve. I had actually sent them a number of other photos, including the one above, with the two leopards and Ben the tracker, but as you know, the editors have the last choice in photos and content. There were some changes to the story by AH Magazine, but that's expected. I'm sure Craig B. can vouch for that! I love the picture of Ben and the two leopards, as the trackers were the real heroes here in spotting his track and drag mark. Without them we would have never had this unbelievable story! I have to give credit where credit is due. Most African trackers and skinners are really the unsung heroes of a successful African Safari. thumb Frankie: I so agree with you. And John is such a humble guy you would never know it!

Would be most interesting to see how much he devoured from the female's carcass. Got any pics? coffee

Thanks everyone for your comments. I hope that you did enjoy it! What you see in the picture is what we brought back to camp. There were other parts of the back portion of the female and the tail that we did not retrieve, and were not useful/needed. John Hunt, the PH, skinned out the larger front portion that we brought back and boiled the skull. He then left it with Ivan DuPlessis, the owner of Jonsyl Farm. I would have loved to have used it in a mount, but my understanding was that we couldn't keep it. I believe that part of the reason was that it was a young female. He actually devoured part of the chest and underside of the female before he was shot, and had, in the process, chewed her in two.

I am wondering if the male actually killed the female or was merely eating the dead carcase. Was there any evidence that he actually killed her?

The trackers checked her over and said that the big male had broken her neck and killed her. She was still quite limber and "fresh" when we found her, although part of her had been eaten. We did not track back to the actual kill site somewhere off of the road to find any further evidence, but there was at least one other female in the area because we saw her tracks and heard her every evening, grunting/sawing. Could have been the competition, could have been that he tried to mate with her and killed her in the process, could have been any number of things, but killed her he did, according to the trackers.

Unfortunately I never get the magazine in a timely manner. I have complained so much I don't think they even send one out to me any longer. All I ever hear from Ant is lousy mail service. Paid for 18 issues, received half since 2006.

I would love to read your story. Maybe you could post it here.

Cool Vaughan... great read and unique hunt!!!!
