Just thought I'd take the Westley Richards out for a walk this weekend to confirm she's ready for five months in Africa.


A wild pig that burst from cover at five meters and tried to pass me. it made about another couple meters. The Woodleigh Soft entered the back ribs and exited the neck with Lung matter.


This wild Goat propped up on a cliff sixty meters above me. Dropped to the shot as usual with Woodleigh softs.

Where all are you headed while there for such an extended period of time?

JT, Would be happy to use your 458 which is the same as Ian Gibson's one (points well).
I'm actually having a 458 built up at the moment but it won't be ready for this trip.

I will be starting with a hunt in Zimbabwe for Elephant with a couple mates and then driving on up into Northern Mozambique for some work and hunting.

Don't forget a side trip this way - we might even squeeze the camel safari before I have to start building camps.

Being watched.

This big old Hyena made the mistake of chilling out near our bait well after dawn.


An Elephant carcass killed by Poachers.




We bumped into this old boy in long grass as we approached a Poached Elephant Caracas. We sat for him that evening, but no show. The next morning we did not see him until I had slipped into the blind. He was fast asleep at the side of the bait.
Due to the six year minimum age requirement set by the reserve we waited until he woke up to assess his age . Seeing the scars and black nose was easy then.
We waited about another twenty minutes for him to stand as his vitals were obscured by a branch.
Unfortunately as he got up he moved away from the bait and moved into the long grass to the left, realizing this could be a problem I raised the rifle and pushed it through the side of the blind and shot him when he was visible quartering away. With the shot he let out a roar and bounded into the grass. Although I felt confident with the shot, we held off the follow up until the Tracker arrived with the Toyota.
Following up on the back of the Toyota seemed a prudent decision. We found him dead a few meters in.
His teeth are worn to stumps and we assume he was around twelve years old and probably wouldn't make another couple seasons.

Oz you are having way to much fun, i am green with envy, please keep the pictures coming...

You certainly have more experience with your 425 than I do with mine.
What is the load you are using?

If I ever get to hunt Old Simba; this is the kind I want to shoot. Looks like me, straggly mane and on his last legs, but probably had his day or two in the sun.
You allowed him to go out with dignity, and immortalized in photo and whatever you opt for a mount or rug.
