Just my two cents.
To all show producers and cable providers.

I will not watch any more shows that will not provide new or repeat, number of episode and mainly what is in that particular show.
I'm simply fed up with those kinda marketing gimmicks.
After D&D it is now a Nosler and Uncharted
There is no need for that kinda BS
I have no more to say

Could you rephrase that?

In English this time?

I think.... he means on the program guides, no info on what's in the episode scheduled.

That's my interpretation on the language used here....best guess anyway.

Yes, that is exactly what he is saying. It is irritating. You don't know what the episode is going to show or be oftentimes. Is it a problem with the cable or dish provider or with the show itself?

Duckear, sorry for my late night English , got a bit peed off with few shows lately so I kinda scribbled it together rather fast.
As paying customers, it is disgrace what the cable providers do to us.
Producers are loosing in this as well...

Plus even though the DVR is set to record only new episodes since those episodes are repeated in three time slots you end up with three copies. Then you have to go through them and try and figure out if they are copies or not.

Also with D&D every single episode said "first aired 4/1/14. Didn't matter which one.

I know what he is saying. When the episode description is, for example, Uncharted for each episode it makes it a bit difficult to sort out.

In my area, the Outdoor Channel shows that I have selected to DVR record all episodes regardless of whether they have played before in spite of the setting indicating to record new shows only. When I get home and check, I may have as many as 5 copies of the same show all with the same generic description.

I'm fairly sure most of these problems are with our cable/satellite providers.

Also, after each commercial they show what happened prior to the commercial break again (like we can't remember what happened a couple of minutes ago). I haven't timed it but I think that a 30 minute show is actually about 15 minutes of program (not including the repeat time).
Also sneaking in the close up shots of the rifle, bino, etc. brands being used for additional advertising time.

Guys...tell the networks. For each episode we have to turn in a 2 sentence description and a 1-2 paragraph description of each show, and more often than not, they put nothing up there on the sat and cable guides and description pages. It also should have an originally aired on date. This is not the producers' faults- it is with the networks. Nothing makes me madder than seeing "No information" or "Hunting, fishing, outdoors" listed as a show description when I know I personally wrote the descriptions.

After trying to view specific shows such as Craig Boddington taking a Cape buff with an 1895 .405 WCF , I gave up on watching ANY TV hunting or fishing shows. The 10-12 minutes of Craig's hunt was very good, but the 20 minutes of rehash and commercials was a huge bore. Had I not been about to take my .405 to Africa for a buff, I would not have watched past the first commercial.
I am too old to waste my remaining time on earth watching commercials or rehashes. heck, I would rather be mowing the pasture or chain Mad sawing down timber than watch TV commercials!

It seems that this should be easy. Why can't they use an exotic system like episode 1, episode 2, etc. I guess that just makes too much sense.

I'm gunna third that comment. Dropped cable years ago, what a waste of time but to each their own.

A big part of the reason these shows suck SO BAD is: fewer people watching TV + more channels of sewage coming through the tube = fragmented and smaller viewing audience = lower advertising dollars = networks pay less for shows = show producers have to save money. So...they shoot a tiny bit of footage, sell more advertisements that take up more air time, hire some jack-wipe with a deep, earnest voice to repeat what you just watched to fill the air time.

It would be great if the networks increased the quality or went bankrupt. Either way works for me.

Not sure even that would help Larry. Today I watched a Sports Afield episode that I recorded. The DVR description indicated that it was a lion hunt in Mozambique. The show was an antelope and mule deer hunt in Wyoming. Eeker

That said, to be clear I find this to be a very minor annoyance and it certainly does not detract from my general enjoyment of the shows.

I'm with MJ on this.
There are entirely too many real problems in this world to fuss over something this trivial.
I can always change channels, delete it from my dvr or turn the durn thing off & go read!
Overall, I still enjoy several hunting shows enough to muddle through any annoyance.

We ask for it all the time as producers....we already supply the information and most networks do put it up on their websites but the problem seems to be at the provider level.

No matter the adrenalin sport you may choose, there is no other activity like safari that is more comprehensively enjoyable while you're doing it, and more conspicuous and thought consuming when you're not. That's why hunting shows stir up so much passion: They're the 'fix' that tide us over between trips to Africa.

I, too, find the lack of episode descriptions to be an irritant. Hell, yesterday I spent almost a minute opening and deleting duplicate programs. It was taxing. But if that and commercials are the price of admission, shows like Track Across Africa are still a bargain.

The hue and cry regarding hunting programs always remind me of the Woody Allen quote, "Porn movies are indecent and immoral. And their lighting is so bad ..."

Unfortunately, did some tweaking with that, and its due to CableVision / Optimum or other not providing enough detail in the Guide, so the function "only new shows" won't work... Not Outdoor Channel's fault.

On the other point - if they don't get ad space, there would not be any of this... it does not fun itself with the $3 p/month we pay for the channel.

I am less concerned with that, than the low overall quality of the shows.

It has been standard newspaper fare, especially with the downward slide from impartial/factual reporting to the situation where the person reporting the on air news is more important than the actual story since the late twenties. The media is a simple propaganda mill for socialism and political correctness.

I gave up watching TAA (is it even still on?), shortly after Craig Boddington left. The shows are now pretty much infommercials. "So, when my PH _____ of the ______ Safari Company and I left camp after a good breakfast, I loaded my ______(brand) firearm topped with ______scope)(brand, _____caliber(brand), and ______ (brand)ammunition. I immediately adjusted my chest harness (brand) and strapped my ______(brand) binoculars in place. I was wearing my latest pattern _______(brand) of safari clothing and ______(brand)boots and _____(brand) socks.

I got to the point where I began sending Emails to those companies to let them know that the constant and overt references had the opposite of their intent. Then, a bit later, I simply stopped watching.

I am moving back to print media, the African Hunting Gazette and its' competitors are much more entertaining and less of an insult to my intelligence.

Because not many have your balls when it comes to sharing a video'd mishap. I give you credit for putting up your cow buffalo video when you knew you would get hammered. Most folks would not do that and a growing number on AR have voiced they will not even put up hunt reports any longer because of the crap they get from the "EXPERTS".

Tim H. has it right. All we producers can do is provide descriptions ( which we do!) Yet the networks rarely use, and often use the wrong ones when they use them at all. If thats too much for some of you, than I guess we loose your eyeballs. Shame. But fuck sakes guys, is not the effort worth something? But no kidding, the good producers bust our ass to entertain you guys with the stuff your supposed to, like us , enjoy. The commercial thing has been beat to death here, it is the reality on our, and damn near every show on TV. And on a rather personal note, and in the most unprofessional way I can provide... Idaho Sharpshooter, the best thing about us breaking with your hero Boddington is not having your fat ass plopping down in our booth like you own the joint and windbagging us with tales of the one or two plains game safaris you have been on. Well said...it is indeed a business and sposors pay the bills. In exchange for that they expect help selling product. There are no free product or safaris or anything else in television and anyone that believes otherwise doesn't have the basic concept of how business works. Value is sometimes traded for equal value but trust me there is a cost. Air time is prohibitively expensive as are production costs, travel costs etc.

We have a fine stable of sponsors whose products I used long before they became sponsors. I believe in each and everyone of them and would use their products even if television wasn't involved. We routinely have companies trying to buy our loyalty to our current sponsors and it isn't for sale. Television is just business and some producers are honest business men and some aren't. Basically the same as any business.

Sponsors are part of the show, despite the fact it bothers and bores me a little I actually see no big deal in watching hosts speak about how "fantastic" their rifles/bullets/optics are every 5 minutes as long as the show is good, it is after all pure entertainment and money has to be made out of it, at the end of the day it is still a business and something people do for a living.

Some shows have mastered the fine art of passive promotions of sponsors and others haven't. It was a real compliment to us when our PH on a recent hunt asked why we never mentioned our sponsors.

I never said your profession had "moral holes". If you'll go back and read it again you will read where I said it was an awesome profession and one I'm super jealous of. I still am. Nobody grows up wanting to make propane. I grew up (along with a billion other boys) wanting to get paid to hunt. You all found a way to do that and are truly living a dream. I'm sorry I came off as you all are doing anything wrong... What I was more trying to convey is how easy it is to change the channel.

But, I was also trying to convey that you shouldn't be so touchy to criticism. You are putting yourself out there to be criticized so deal with it. You are obviously doing something right if people keep paying you for what you do. Maybe you are so touchy because maybe a small part of you thinks I'm right. You are (industry wide) more salesman though than honest promotion in my opinion. I want to ask you an honest question that you can't answer because if you honestly did, a couple of your sponsors would drop you. Are you just making due with some of the equipment you use?Could you make Howa and Simmons look just as good if they paid you the most?

One of the most glaring examples is Preditor Quest's Les Johnson. A couple years ago every coyote he felled was due to the magic of his Howa and Simmons scope. He made due with who was sponsoring and now that he found a deeper pocketed sponsor you will not see him lowering himself to Simmon scopes.

Sorry once again for making you feel hurt by my opinions. I still have them and you are still getting paid to go hunt so who is the looser of this argument?

Todd

Hi Todd,
I don't think you were confrontational at all. I have seen Dave get overly defensive on this subject for years. It doesn't really bother me, I have the ultimate control anyway. A wallet and a remote control.

You made some very good points by the way.

Steve
