retreeverFate of the African Lion
I watched this video given to me by Greg Brownlee On the current status of the African lion. Zim and zambia understanding the lion and the understanding of management and what an area can hold and not be detrimental to the people and their holdings and cattle.
The same in Tanzania trying to take care of the lion and their cause is very noble indeed, all will fail when the government and Professional hunters association let in the likes of Zair Mulla who along with his thugs raped and pillaged hunting blocks and also national parks.
I know it is easy for me to write this but I have decided not to pursue my dream of shooting a lion. I have seen them and have no desire to get a body count of lions nor shoot a canned lion. I see the biggest problem being greed and money.
To those involved I commend them for the love of their countries and resources, yes we need them to be there and protect their environments.
Did have some problems with the DVD will try it on the puter later.
Greg thank you. Mike

D R HunterImagine pre-politicized hunting. I read books
that included stories of hunting SILVER BACKS!
Carl Ackley did it for one. To have hunted before
1900 would be beyond words.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Aaron NeilsonMike - Zig's video is informative, and well done, no doubt!!
Most importantly, the lion needs continued hunting from guys like you! Its that value, that dollar raised, that is the biggest factor right now - in not only continued hunting of the lion, but continued viability of the lion throughout most of its range. In particular, those outsides on National Parks/Preserves.
Whether you shoot 1 or 101, each hunter who is participating in a Lion Hunt - is in one way or another, helping to further the conservation of the lion!
If I could afford it, I would hunt em 4-5 times a year. Successful or not, I would know that for the most part, I was also playing an important role in the continued conservation of the "King"!
I hope you reconsider, as I know you were keen to get your lion at one time. Good luck my friend!

www.huntghr.com What Aaron says is correct! Hunting is the only way forward for lion outside of photo-suitable parks. Without that value...the lion is a pest. It WILL be eradicated from those areas.
Yes...please do hunt lion. Just do your homework and shoot
an appropriate lion or just ENJOY the hunt!

D R HunterDr Easter,
That definition seems OUTSTANDINGLY constructed!
I am NO expert and likely will never set foot in
Africa, much less hunt there due to the cost; but
I remain a huge fan of the activity, and enjoy the
stories that come from the clients and pro hunters
alike.
I present this question: Should all male lions over
a given age, (say 8-12 months) be collared and
electronically monitored for location and well being
status; then when a given male reaches the right age
AND is in the right social condition to be AN APPRO-
PRIATE lion to HUNT be RECOLLARED with one that
clearly identifies him as a LEGAL one to SPORT HUNT?

D R,
I don't think that is necessary at this point and would be an incredibly challenging task not mention expensive. If lion ever got to the same level as rhino...yes, your thoughts would be appropriate.
In my life...I watched the rhino go down the drain. You have to remember that as short a time ago as the 80's there were black rhino roaming the lower Zambezi Valley.
My goal is for lion to NEVER reach that level.

MARK H. YOUNGMike,
You have it wrong! The only reason not to hunt lion if you want one is because you just can't afford it. Not hunting lion regardless of your motivation only allows entities like Lion Aid to win. They don't care how you feel about lions as long as you don't hunt them.

dogcatAfter spending a lot of time on a recent leopard hunt, I quizzed our PH's about lion hunting in Zim and RSA. All three agreed that lion in Zim is strong and should be hunted. They said the lions in Bubye were exceptional and beginning to take out significant numbers of buff and plains game there, quotas need to go up. Same for parts of the Zambezi Valley areas. They also supported lion hunting in South Africa as a means to take pressure off the lions in other areas. The cost of plains game hunts in Namibia and RSA have hammered the plains game hunts in ZIm and Zam to the point where the outfits there cannot compete with the prices. They felt their future was mostly dangerous game.
They supported the lion hunts and said several outfits can offer a good hunt and not just a shoot. I asked about the hunts around Krueger Park and they said the hunts are "real" and a bit more dangerous as the lions are more used to seeing people and no nearly so skittish. Same with the elephant there. They said that there is no real way to establish breeding lions in the game ranches in RSA due to time and cost, but that some of the outfits have lions that self sustaining . Ethics aside, they had no issues and thought lion hunting in RSA was positive for lions.

I will hunt them again someday but I respect for you for not shooting a canned lion. To me, there is no difference between a canned hunt and just buying a lion mount at an estate sale.
I'll 2nd what Mike says about the video being excellent and very informative. I too had problems with it skipping in places, just figured that it didn't copy correctly.
Mike, I do have to disagree with you about hunting lions again. I've hunted them twice, for a total of 39 days in Zim and Bots before finally one. I'd love to hunt them another time or two, and the only thing stopping me is $$$, or specifically a lack thereof. I will hunt them again, if they're still available when the $$$ improves enough.

boarkillerI'd love to hunt wild lion one day, but elephant hunting seems to get in the way and the price seems prohibitive, but there are plenty of us hunters that can afford it and that's a good thing.
So in nutshell, it would be nuts to stop lion hunting, because of immediate loss of value and of course means " gone with the wind"
" Until the day breaks and the nights shadows flee away " Big ivory for my pillow and 2.5% of Neanderthal DNA flowing thru my veins.
When I'm ready to go, pack a bag of gunpowder up my ass and strike a fire to my pecker, until I squeal like a boar.
