Just received the Feb issue of American Hunter and looking thru quickly (did not read article) the writter refered to his 120 inch Dugga Boy page 58. Could others with more experience comment on the Buffalo - is that a Dugga Boy. It appears to be a bit young to me but that is why I am asking.

The last 120 inch dugga boy was shot by Fred Flintstone, 22 miles north of Bedrock.

He used the horns to support his 10 feet wide fron door. clap

My copy hasn't come yet, so can't comment on the Buff! My copy should be here in a day or two!

Though I have been getting the American Hunter mag as long as it has been available, I don't generally find it to be a very good magazine, especially with articles about African animals, or hunting! I guess that may be the reason it is called American Hunter! hillbilly Mostly just political crap, and precious little hunting, of any kind! coffee

In all fairness, Saeed, I do think it is 120 SCI inches as it is wide between the bosses and has deep curls and not broomed back. That is why I questioned the caption "Dugga Boy". Big Grin

It certainly appears soft and grey in between, with no absolutely formed hard boss. Fully haired up on both body and face bespeaks of youth, not age. Very long, and pointed horns give it lots of length for a 120 SCI score. His PH was Paul Smith with Chifuti, so I'd be surprised if they mis-judged it, so maybe score was important to him.

The one in the article before his with Jeff Johnston is truly a leather-faced, worn down, hard bull.

Bedrock can be reached via Chete, by lake Kariba.

You drive about 7 miles due south, the road then turns east, there is a boabbab tree at that turn.

Leave your truck there, and continue walking due south. Depending how fast you are walking, between 6 to 9 hours you will run out of any walter you might have carried.

You will find yourself surrounded by mountains that make Mount Everest look like a little hill. You will try to find a tree to sit under its shade, you won't find any.

Only small mopane trees with trunks barely 3 inches across. You will sit next to one of these. Then you will start medidating.

You will ask your PH "What the hell are we doing here?"

He will say "We are hunting"
"But we have not hunted anything all day"
"Well, the day is not over yet. There is still 20 minutes before sun down"
"We haven't shot anything all day, what makes you think we will shoot anything now the sun is going down?"
"After the sun goes down. We will start walking back to the truck, which is 27 kilometers thataway. It is very likely we will run into those elephant herds with calves. Just make sure you rifle is pointing straight up before you shoot as the cows charge. We do not want anyone getting shot by accident, do we?"
"No I guess not"

Sadly, we did not meet Fred and Wilma. And now that Bob has ruined Zimbabwe, it is not very likely that I would get the chance to do that again!

That is a really nice looking bull, and yes he is quite soft. He has great drop and curl but is still quite young and doesn't meet most peoples criteria for a dugga boy. Most outfitters prefer you to shoot an old hard bossed bull which normally fall far short of established benchmarks. But this is a more efficient use of the resource and probably better for herd dynamics.

I am assuming they mean either 120 centimeters wide, or 47 inches, or that it is the SCI total score. Haven't seen the Pict yet.

That is the SCI total score, which includes measuring the horns around the curves and the width of the bosses.

It's a prime example of how "official" measurement methods often bear no relation to what's really important in assessing a trophy animal, IMHO.

For instance, my 39" buffalo "scored" 106.

Having only hunted buff on four safaris leaves Me far short of expert status but that buff is IMO not a mature as in "hard bossed" bull. Mark Keefe seems to be a good guy and a good spokesperson for our causes but the areas near where the horns should nearly join"the growth area" appears soft to Me. I believe they just have unusual drop for his age. A wonderful animal in any case. There must be a real expert who can offer a more learned opinion.

The SCI measuring system is about pumping up egos, it relates to nothing in my opinnion, every animal you shoot will make the book, but it may be number 1000, the gold, silver, bronze thing is a crock IMO...Roland Ward is better but even it does not relate to what a real old warrior looks like, it omits character, but hey that is solely my opinnion and probably a few others...

That bull is no dagga boy, he is a young bull of less than 3 years old, he has his full size, but was never given a chance to mature and become the bull he was destined to be, and that my friends is a damn shame, but the PH gets his bragging rights and the hunter didn't know better. Again my opinnion.
