9 essentially mature lions/lionesses driven off a kill by 3 men without noise or threatening behavior.

Somewhere within the genetic memory of the lion (past 10.000 years, give or take), humans were very bad-ass critters.

Confidence and weapons make the difference.

Neat video.

On a strictly photographic 'safari' years ago in Kenya, my nutty brother decided to hop the game fence around the compound somewhere on the Serengeti, so as to not get caught smoking by our old man. It was dusk, and I declined, deciding that my getting caught puffing a butt was a nicer idea than getting attacked by a wild critter. I finished my butt and was heading back up the stairs (the lodge was a series of pods of huts set up on large web of raised stilts), and turned to tell my brother that he'd wasted his time climbing the ~14' fence, and that we'd better get back to the room. That's when I saw movement about 120 yards off, behind my brother.

It was a LIONESS, in a stalking crouch, boring holes in my brother's back with her eyes and moving slowly toward him. I calmly said, "Lee, don't run, but walk over this instant and climb the fence. NOW. Don't look back and don't fall. I swear to you this isn't a joke" He saw in my face that I wasn't kidding, he told me later.

Big cats scare the shit out of me. Anyone who has seen lion, and smelled them up close, maybe watching them devour a kill, crunching bones with their faces crimson, if nothing else, well, respect comes to mind.

Kamo Gari,
I've not been up close against a pissed off Lion, but have been close to several pissed off lionesses. Somehow, they get my aroussal(attack mode) up, without any other (fear) emotion coming in to play. At night, of course, would likely be a different thing.
And one must be able to evaluate the initial attitude of every critter encounterd, whether chihuahua or elephant.

And yet again, I've stumbled across another use/market for my invention. Three skinny dudes with rudimentary weapons and a HONGRY appetite could employ one of these bad boys.

Probably because they have seen a family member shot by man.

The bushmen (san) in the Kalahari do it all the time. Pride sizes in western Zim/eastern Botswana are smaller (typically 4-5 adults) but still...also the lions don't always back off. About once every two years or so a bunch of bushmen would troop up to the house asking for my mom to sew up some lad who had got chewed about.

Bushman tactics when things go wrong is to lie facedown before the lion hits them and cover their necks with their hands. Apparently you may get clawed or even chewed upon but never killed outright. Looking at some of the injuries sustained if they hadn't got to us and had the wounds properly cleaned out and recieved anti-biotics, I imagine a fair proportion who got mauled would have died due to infection.

I think it worked because the lions were not starving, and had a good healthy fear of man due to hunting pressure.
The 3 hunters acted in a dominate way and showed no fear, if the lions need the meat more than their instict to flee things could have gotten ugly.
