I'll vote for Lion every time because it is the great predator of Africa. From time immortal the Lion has preyed on everything, including man. No doubt Elephant is king when it comes to size and power, and I truly respect their gargantuan size and power. But let's just be glad they're not a carnivore! Yes, Hippo's are extremely territorial and view anyone on their turf as something to be immediately sorted out. Due to so many indigenous people being reliant on Africa's waterways, they come into contact with Hippo's in a bad way. Elephant vs Hippo would probably result in the Hippo trying to escape or die IMHO. No doubt an adult African Ele could whip anything on the continent based just on size and power, but most animals would retreat when victory was in doubt. On the other hand, I imagine a rutted up bull Ele would shy from nothing other than a well placed bullet. I agree with LDK. Elephant are the toughest overall, but there is only one "King of the Jungle" and that's the Lion.

I do believe the Romans asked such questions and found that bears were the true "King". Even when they bound the bears hind leg by a chain, the African lions stood no chance of survival. There is much documentation of these "blood sport" animal fights from history. GVA

If young Juvenile Elephant bulls was/is able to kill black and white rhino without serious harm to themselves I dont see anything else except T-Rex to stomp ele It happened in Pilansberg and Hluluwe/Umfolozi. Frederik Cocquyt I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

The lion is smart enough not to challenge an adult elephant although they have been known to kill elephant calves. 465H&H

The Lion is King, his primary source of food is buffalo and he is not particular which one. A pride Lion King will not take on a buff alone as that is not his style, unlike a human he feels no need to prove a point. He also lets mama and her lady friends do the hunting. I have seen a film of 4 Lions killing a very big near adult female elephant. Could an adult male Lion kill a grown buff alone, yes they can and the old kicked out males actually do that. They just jump on the buffs butt and start chewing on the spine until the buff goes down and sometimes that takes awhile... Lots of buff in the bush without a tail, because soem Lion shot low! Without a doubt it is the Leopard! The leopard is the ultimate predator and the ultimate survivor. He will be the last of the big cats to become extinct.

I wrote the following 15 years ago and re-produce it below by the kind permission of Gregor Woods at Magnum Magazine. Even though I wrote it long ago I think it still holds true. The difference is I love walk and stalk lion hunts and almost cry when I see an ele go down. Expressions from the bush One bright morning in ‘88 I was trudging wearily home along the Hwange National Park boundary. My land rover was stopped near a pan some 5km behind me where we had arrived the night before to monitor elephant movement out of the park. Being a land rover she had decided to stay there, hence by 6 o’clock I was annoyed as well as tired. I was therefore very grateful to see Frank turning onto the boundary road a couple of hundred metres ahead. Frank was a guide with a local safari company and was taking a group of clients out on an early morning game drive. Their standard route was through the forestry lands adjacent to the park, then through to Hwange main camp and then to the various scenic spots in the park. They didn’t often use the boundary road, but I didn’t bother to ask why the change, I was just glad to be able to hitch a ride for the last 15 or so kilometres back to main camp. There were four clients in the vehicle. A rather fat American sitting next to Frank, a Swedish couple in the middle seat, and sitting high up alone on the back seat, was a rather attractive young German lass. I briefly explained why I was walking to Frank, puffed out my chest and climbed into the back seat next to the German girl. Maria was pleasant company and I soon stopped rehearsing the tirade I was going to deliver to the ranger mechanic upon my return. We cruised slowly down the dirt road, discussing the birds, the trees, what she was doing alone in the wilds of African and “oh look, there is un elephant on ze road behind ons.†Blast the elephant: but sure enough there was a young bull crossing the road behind us. The Swedish couple had heard, and were peering backwards over the side of the land rover and asking Frank to go back. Frank reversed up a short distance, and swung the Landie sideways so that everybody could see. Another Elephant began to cross the road ahead. “Cow ahead Frank†I said. He glanced hastily round “Ja, I just hope its not that big breeding heard that has been moving in and out of the park for the last few days. On Tuesday I got caught up amongst them and was stuck for four hoursâ€. “Relax Frank, your tourii will enjoy it and that’s what they are paying you forâ€. Frank snorted. “Paying the boss for†he quipped “and I still need my breakfastâ€. The young bull was making his way leisurely along the road killing off the odd tree as he made his way towards us. Maria and the Swedish couple were enchanted and took endless photographs. When the bull got to about 10 metres I turned to whisper to Frank that I thought It was time to leave. Hwange elephants are pretty docile, nothing like Gonarezhou elephants that seem to charge at the slightest whiff of man. Never-the-less an elephant is an elephant especially as I only had my issue F.N. (in 7.62), and Frank routinely didn’t carry a rifle. Before I could speak though, I realised we had a different problem. Sniffing the front bull bars was a very large Hwange bull. “Sit #@$%!! Still and Shut Up†hissed Frank. There was a slight gasp from the Swedish lady as she saw the elephant, and then everybody just froze. Bull bar not edible or interesting:- the elephant moved his attention further back into the open land rover. His trunk lightly passed over Frank and then snuffled past the American. To my amazement the mans hair seemed to come away in the elephants’ trunk. Toupée’s aren’t common out here and it was the first time I had ever seen anybody wearing a rug. I was intrigued, as was the elephant, who brought the mop up to eye level and stared intently at it with his piggy little myopic eye for several seconds before carelessly tossing it away. The fat man in the front had made no sound as he was de-rugged but I did notice that his head had gone a very bright red. Nothing in the front seats, so the elephants’ trunk swept further back. He plucked at the Swedish ladies camera, but she clung onto it and he let it pass. Nothing interesting in the middle seat. The big bull moved forward and put his knees on the bull bars and stretched his trunk out to smell Maria in the back seat. She was wearing a very pleasant, but quite subtle perfume. The elephant obviously agreed with my assessment for he worked the tip of his trunk along both sides of her neck sniffing intently. Maria’s eyes were getting wider and wider and I was beginning to wonder if I should to do the double rugged thing and shout at the elephant. This usually worked (note usually) but if it did would undoubtably score more brownie points with Maria than any number of first class meals or subsequent chest beating would. The problem was if this wasn’t a “usually†day. I noticed the American in the front seat was now staring upwards into the elephants mouth and Frank next to him was doing likewise. Suddenly Frank spoke. “ The lion may be King, but I reckon the Elephant is god!†The bull stopped sniffing Maria and turned his attention to whence the sound had come. The fat man burbled something incoherent as the bulls trunk passed over him. Again the Elephant stopped, and then apparently being satisfied that there was no fruit in the vehicle or that we were actually people or whatever, the bull wandered off. It was another couple of hours before the 300 strong herd had finished crossing the road, during which time I had hopped out of the vehicle and recovered the rug and returned it to its still gibbering owner. As Frank was behind schedule he dropped me off on the tar road to hitch a lift into main camp and returned with his clients to the lodge for a belated breakfast and a strong drink. I never did see Maria again, but when ever I hear the King roar at night, I remember just how puny he is compared to god!
