Those of you who have been or are going to Ngorongoro might know this fella...

My mouth just won't stop watering.

Magnificent looking fellow! How would you like to gaze in his eyes at 15 yards in a hunting area. I would probably develop tunnel vision and shoot the dang horn.

I've seen this buffalo before, and I believe he was found dead killed by lions later, and the skull, and horns recovered! Mybe not the same one but if not it is his brother!

Damn fine buffalo, for sure! After twenty five years of hunting buffalo, I still haven't been able to get a bull with a wider than 44" horns. That dude would do the trick, for sure! He not only has width, but mass as well!

I suppose beauty really is in the eyes of the beholder. When they get that wide, I think they look disproportionate. (Kinda like when a woman goes overboard with breast augmentation).

I find the bulls with about a 40 inch spread, heavy boss, deep curl and nice, sharp points curving to the rear to be the ideal. I guess if nothing else, holding that opinion improves my chances of bagging the "perfect" buff. :-)

I'm not a boob guy. I wonder if there's a correlation between guys who like big big women and buffs?

Well this bull is a old warrior and he probably has several young bulls with his genome around the area aswell.

I wonder how much place those horns would take up on a wall??

Besides that buffalo did not die of natural causes. He was killed in Botswana out of season with a .45-70. If you log onto waterpisser.com you can read all about it!

The one you are referring to was killed in Lake Manyara National park by lions about 6-8 years ago. This picture was taken yesterday morning in the Ngorongoro - you are right, they look very similar. The PH friend that took this picture estimated him at not less than 60 inches. The cow along with him will carry his genes

In that case, they should dart her and auction her off in RSA asap!! Too bad they are TB carriers...

What do you reckon gives the crater bulls such great horns? Is it just the lack of hunting pressure, or a specific local gene pool?

Sorry that looks like a young bull with the big boy! Unless cows have bosses in Tanzania.

I can't remember the PH's name, but Fred Bezuidenhout did his apprenticeship under him. Fred told me the buffalo skull was picked up and listed as such in Rowland Ward. It either measured 62" or 64"; again my memory fails me.

The story of the big buff killed by lions at Lake Manyara National Park surfaces every couple years. I'm pretty sure the horns were recovered in 1998 or 1999. There was a photo of the buff alive, taken by a German hunter in the months before it was killed. In Nov. 2000 I was in Arusha with P.H. Ernst Scholz (Tanzania Game Trackers). A taxidermist a few miles from where Ernst lived had the horns and was advertising them as the "World Record" and listed at 64". The taxidermist apparently obtained them from a government official and had a crew of workers making reproductions of the horns, selling for 2000 USD a copy as I recall. Ernst is a Master Measurer for SCI and offered to measure/score the horns. They measured 62 6/8 in spread. They didn't score that high as there wasn't much mass or depth of curl. Here are some photos...

Yup, that's Fred Rademeyer. Although he told me at the time that he had been the PH for the client who shot the buff. Which is clearly stretching the truth a bit.

that was massive those horns, if i had seen that bull, i think i have to had a box of nitroglyserin with me,just in case.
