This is a monument located in the bush near the Luangawa River in Zambia. We cocated this monument covered in brush, and un-attended for many years. There were elephant tracks not three meters from the monument. We cleaned up the brush, rounded up some bleach and soap and cleaned it up. Having been there since 1929 it was obvious that someone cared a lot about Mr. Sayer to go to all of that effort. The oldest natives we could locate seemed to think he was a Game Ranger when he was killed but they were not positive.

If anyone has any ideas please let us know.

Here is the photo you are refferring to. I saw the same memorial when I was in Mwanya in 2009 (Stephen was still and appie back then). They told me who he was, but I've forgotten. This should help though:

That is indeed the monument and Stephen is still there. We were there in 2009 as well, still close to Stephen, Fico and his Mum.

Glad to hear it. I believe I was in the area shortly after you because they showed it to me cleaned up as in the photo. Didn't have my camera or I'd have taken a photo of it as well.

He was an elephant hunter in the Luangwa Valley more or less at the same time as Anzac Mills in the nineteen twenties and thirties. He is the great-grandfather of Mellem Sayer Reed.

The stone is said to be located approximately 12 deg 48’ 50.42” South Latitude, 32 deg 02’ 43.07” East Longitude. Elevation about 547m. The tombstone is north and west of the road D104 within about 10 meters of the road but he was exhumed and later buried in England.

Thanks so much for the information from Scotland. We had that as well, it sadly took us to a dead-end.

We have however recently managed throug this site and great folks like yourself just about have the case solved.

Have gone through more than a few Paradox and Euopola guns, they are seriously a lot of fun. Do you use them yourself? Will you be at the SCI Convention in Vegas this Month? If you are going to be there, it would be lovely to get together for a few minutes.
