I don't have the book, but I was at a friends house and was looking at the book Safari by Bartle Bull. There was a pic in there that was taken at night, either by flash or flashlight that shows a hunter on his back, holding a double rifle with a lion on top of him. Neither the lion or the hunter looked happy.
I just thumbed through the book quickly, and couldn't find any description of the incident..anyone know about it? Thanks in advance.

He was in the movie IN THE BOOOD that told of a safari with decendents of Teddy Roosevelt. His comments were somewhat suspect at that time, at least. What happened to his opinions after that, I don't know.

The book, however, is well researched and most informative. It is one of my favorites concerning Africa.

All Bartle bBull mentions is that Mike Prettejohn was taken on his first elephant hunt at age 16 by Bunny Allen (along with Bunny's son Anton,15, and Tony Archer, 16). The boys got five ele between them.
"All three boys went on to become white hunters, with Mike Prettejohn not giving up till he had been mauled by a lion, thrown by a rhinocerous, and crushed and shot during a buffalo hunt."

I have the book. Page 310. Agreed! It does not look good.

Hard to say. He's become rather flakey in his later years, vascillating without any particular logic all over the political landscape between extremely liberal Democrats and right-wing Republicans (he most recently went far-right). He has a son by the same name who contributed thousands to anti-gunner Rudy Guiliani's abortive presidential campaign, so that could be the person to whom the anti-hunting sentiments may be attributed.

Nonetheless, Safari is well worthwhile and appears to be meticulously researched historically.

Chronicle of Safari by Bull is an excellent and well researched history of hunting in Africa. His other works are weak in my opinion (The Nile Cafe).
