True. However, I kinda have a huntch that the 338 Federal isn't going to suffer the same fate. It may never be really popular, but it won't fade away soon, mostly because it is offered in the AR. In a bolt rifle, it's less impressive, but it's in a good spot in the AR, as a hunting cartridge, not at all as a tactical cartridge.

Little heads up. You have to use an ArmaLite barrel nut. Put another way you have to use a forearm that will fit an Armalite. Armalite has a different thread size on their upper receiver.

small problem Big Grin The upper comes with a forearm, of course, and if I upgrade, there is no charge for the labor to install it.

That's good, but the thing I don't like about ArmaLite is that there are less after marker free float tubes for them because of that. Fortunately they will take any AR 10 barrel.

Kabluewy,

Remember we talked about the 8mm Kurtz in the AR 15. Well that would involve a special bolt and barrel extension that are very expensive. I solved the problem with the cartridge pictured below. Necking up the 6.5 Grendel to 8mm looks like a pretty good copy of the 8mm Kurtz. Pictured alongside of it is a 6x45.

Here are some Random Thoughts. I do see you are in AK.

How much range do you actually need???

An AR in 450 Bushmaster is good to 200 yards or so, and will be on the 223 sized frame, and thus quite a bit handier than a 308 AR...

I would not feel too uncomfortable with a 450 Bushmaster, 458 SOCOM or a 50 Beawolf in Alaska, IF it fit my range requirements, I would not want to be carrying any other smaller bore calibre that fit the 223 sized frame.

I have used the 308 enough to know, that for me, with the right bullets I would feel safe with it anywhere.

Same goes for the 338 Federal.

One thing I learned, hunting with an H&K 91, in 308, is that using the over the shoulder "combat type" sling, that positions the gun "hanging" in front of the chest, actually makes carrying the H&K 91, over long periods of time, and/or in rough steep country, easier than carrying a much lighter, "regular" sport hunting rifle. rifle
