Or, do their selections reflect the cartridges they actually hunt with in places where they hunt with a rifle?

Well, while Alaska is not in the continental US, it is still the US. A lot of people in Alaska use the same guns for hunting as used in the lower-48 states, from the .270 and smaller to the .375 H& and larger. If you include the big bears most hunters tend to pick the larger calibers, but otherwise all kinds of smaller guns are used.

What is "real hunting?"
I have shot more animals in Africa than the US, but I hunt the US as well, including deer on my own in MN. For that, I use a .308 Win. My fav med bores are 28 Nosler, .308 Win, 300 RUM, .338 Win (great elk cartridge), and .338 Edge/Lapuas.

What is "real hunting?"

Good points. I use a .338WM for all my hunting in Alaska, other than birds or course. For birds such as grouse I use either a .22LR pistol with a red dot sight, or a .22-caliber bolt action rifle loaded with either .22 Short or .22LR.
I imagine that I could use a .270, or a 30-06 for all my big game hunting, but I figured long ago that the .338WM was perfect for
my hunting from caribou to moose and any other Alaska game I can think of. There are lots of .33-caliber bullets to choose from (heavy to lightweight plus soft to hard). The .338 was introduced to the market as "The Alaskan" for good reasons.

376 steyr375er has a great combo that are well separated for power and usability and that will cover everything. 25-06 with 24" barrel for smaller and long range shooting, 30-06 for everything in NA and plains game and 375 H&H for DG the world over.

enfieldsparesI've never liked the original Winchester Magnum series of cartridges from a prejudice against the .300 Winchester Magnum which usurped IMHO the much better designed .308 Norma Magnum.
Yet I have to say that the .338 Winchester Magnum is a "classic" in all respects. If I ever had need for a medium bore firing a bullet of 250 grains it'd be my first choice always.
As to smaller sizes below that I've had them these .243 WCF, 6mm Remington, .270 WCF, 7x64, .280 Remington, .30-06, 8x57, 8x60S, 9x57.
Of them my prejudice would be to 6mm Remington and .30-06 if I was OK with anything between 100 grains up to 180 grains but if I wanted heavier to favour the 196 grain loaded 8x60S.
But in truth there isn't much that 6mm Remington and .30-06 won't handle even though in the 196 and 227 grain weights the 8x60S does it more elegantly!

JabaliHunterI like 6.5mm as a light rifle, and a .375 Wby/H&H would be my pick for a heavy (not stopper) rifle, so i’d probably have most use for a fast open country 7mm as my medium.
Since I’d be allowed another two mediums, I’d have a .30-06 for driven boar and a pre-war Mauser .303, .350 or 9,3x62

I personally like having different rifles and different cartridges. Few that I don't like. I am also fond of many that have the magnum designation.
I suppose 3 for me without the magnum designation would be:

dwheelsI've read a lot of these posts and if I had to do it withing the specs. of all medium bores it would be .270, 338 Win Mag, and just for giggles a .35 Whelen. But I just couldn't do it in real life without a small bore in the mix. So lets say a .223, .270, .338 Win Mag. DW

I think we agree. For small bore a 223 is compatible with the above, though a 243Win or 257Bob give more overlap and coverage for medium game.

Tex84I’ve settled on the 35 Whelen for my top end medium bore. I’m going to have Hill Country Rifles put together a left handed Whelen on a stainless Remington action with a McMillan stock. It seems like it’s hard to beat a 225 grain accubond or partition (with a SD of .251) traveling at 2700 fps. Especially considering that a 165 grain bullet out of a 30-06 (SD of .248) travels at 2800 fps. I think the Whelen will be perfect for large plains game, elk, moose, and bear.
I haven’t made a decision yet on the “small” medium bore that I’ll use for deer, sheep, and pronghorn. Still leaning towards the 7mm-08, but the 280AI has my attention.

I've had very good luck with my .350 RM (same velocities as the Whelen) shooting 225gr Nosler Partitions on large northern Canadian black bears. None have ever needed more than one shot and all went down right now. Unless a flatter trajectory is needed at longer range either of these two .35's is an excellent choice.

257 Roberts - Light weight rifle, carry all day, shoots flat
7x64 - Heavy barrel and stock, diallable scope. Very easy to lay down and hit something along way with
9.3x62 - classic sporter with Leica Red Dot, great for anything "in the thick stuff" such as routling out wild boar

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

dpcdThe way your 9.3x62 Mosin shoots, sub .5 MOA (and that is a verified number, not a keyboard stroke like many are), and as flat as it shoots up to any reasonable game range, there is no need for anything else from prairie dogs to Moose.
So, one caliber will do it all.
