I am new to the blackpowder scene. I have recently gotten hooked up with a local club and suddenly my little .36 caliber revolver that kept me happy for so many years isn't enough!
So I am looking for a rifle for hunting and some casual steel shooting.
My paramaters are this, 1. I have a .54 caliber mold. 2. I won't spend more that $300.00. 3. I won't use inline and prefer not to complicate things with flintlock. 4. I won't buy anything with a synthetic stock. (Am I on target with the .54 mold? Is one caliber better?)

Lars, Your answer is probably a titch over $300, but not by more than a few bucks. Lyman Great Plains percussion rifle. It comes in .54 and depending on whether your mold is a round ball or conical, it comes in slow or fast twist to suit. Be sure you get the right twist for whichever type of mold you have.

I second the suggestion of the Lyman. Most find that they shoot better with the primative buckhorn or semi-buckhorn sight rather than the adjustable sight. Once sighted in there is no need to adjust the sights anway.

Preacher, you need to spend a little more than $300.00, and get a Lyman Great Plains rifle in .54!! A .54 is an excellent caliber, especially for shooting round balls, and is a great elk caliber as well as for deer. This is the caliber of the Lewis & Clark Expedition's M1803 Harpers Ferry rifles!!
