I am new to the blackpowder scene. I have recently gotten hooked up with a local club and suddenly my little .36 caliber revolver that kept me happy for so many years isn't enough!

So I am looking for a rifle for hunting and some casual steel shooting.

My paramaters are this,
1. I have a .54 caliber mold.
2. I won't spend more that $300.00.
3. I won't use inline and prefer not to complicate things with flintlock.
4. I won't buy anything with a synthetic stock.
(Am I on target with the .54 mold? Is one caliber better?)

So here goes...

Let's hear what everyone has to recommend.

Lars,
Your answer is probably a titch over $300, but not by more than a few bucks. Lyman Great Plains percussion rifle. It comes in .54 and depending on whether your mold is a round ball or conical, it comes in slow or fast twist to suit. Be sure you get the right twist for whichever type of mold you have.

Another CANDIDATE, and probably the best price on a GPR.

Yep,

I second the suggestion of the Lyman. Most find that they shoot better with the primative buckhorn or semi-buckhorn sight rather than the adjustable sight. Once sighted in there is no need to adjust the sights anway.

Preacher, you need to spend a little more than $300.00, and get a Lyman Great Plains rifle in .54!! A .54 is an excellent caliber, especially for shooting round balls, and is a great elk caliber as well as for deer. This is the caliber of the Lewis & Clark Expedition's M1803 Harpers Ferry rifles!!
